Looe Branch - Evening Fish

Post by davemarvin »

Here is something unusual nowadays - a branch line which is still part of the national rail network - but is now only a shadow of its former self. In addition to the passenger service, minerals from the huge complex of mines and quarries north of Moorswater were carried to Looe harbour for shipment, and fish was collected from the quay. The original station was nearer the town, and beyond that were sidings and a line onto the quay, which I believe was closed in 1954.

So now we go back to a balmy August evening, with holiday-makers taking a stroll, as class 45xx No.5531 arrives with fish vans to take the catch from the trawlers at the quayside...

As darkness falls, loading is completed, and No.5531 gets slowly underway...

...and away up the East Looe River.

At Liskeard yard (which is too dark to see), the vans will be attached to an overnight fish train to Paddington, from where the boxes will be taken across London to Billingsgate Market.

With thanks to Reg Furniss for the route and to all providers of the stock (and inspired by the shots of WesternInvader).

A few more gloomy shots I'm afraid, but it's all I could find of the early morning fish train from Cornwall arriving at Paddington, on this occasion behind No.5034 'Corfe Castle'...

Pulling in...

...to Platform 7

Quiet time

Upto the buffers

Job done...

...and on time.

With additional thanks to Derick Joy and Dave Pascoe.
