Ashburton Branch - The Goods at Buckfastleigh

Post by davemarvin »

I hope that it's worth having another look at this typical GW branch.

A daily weekday goods served the branch until closure in 1962, although passenger services had ceased 4 years earlier. The goods was a Newton Abbot working which, in 1960 for instance, left Totnes for the branch at 10.30am and returned at 2.15pm. During that time, it was booked to spend 50 minutes at Buckfastleigh on the journey down and 30 minutes on the way back up. At various times in their history, the goods shed and yard at Buckfastleigh were responsible to the despatch of paper, fruit, milk, timber products, wool and stone, whilst coal was an important import. At one time there were 9 staff employed, including signalmen. (Any additional snippets of information would be very useful.)

We join the goods as it approaches Buckfastleigh from Totnes with our old friend class 44xx No.4405 in charge...

Totnes Road Bridge

Entering the loop at Station House

Waiting for a down passenger to pass

The autotrain pulls in

When the autotrain has cleared...

...the goods is called on by the box

Leaving the loop before setting back into the yard

Shunting in progress

Dropping off empty vans

Supplies for the Co-op coal merchant

Returning from Ashburton...

...with a light load of empty vans

A word with the box...

...and a joke with the porter whilst running back to Totnes.

With thanks to Reg Furniss and to all providers of stock.

It is very unlikely that all wagons in the train would be GW.

Unfitted opens, minerals and vans became common user in 1917 so any companies wagon would be used.
Less than a third of wagons in a typical train would belong to the parent company.

Coal would come from the Forest of Dean or Cannock but could be from anywhere depending on price.
Anthracite would come from South Wales.
Most would be loaded in colliery wagons.

Thanks everyone. Ian, Thanks for the information on wagons and coal. The coal wagons used are Princess Royal, which I assume was the colliery of that name on the Oakwood Branch north of Lydney. Would that be a likely possibility as a source for Ashburton ? There may be interesting linkups of traffic between Lydbrook and Ashburton routes.

I should mention that most of the Ashburton Branch is still thriving under the South Devon Railway Trust, running between Buckfastleigh and Totnes (Littlehempston).

I would ditch that mineral wagon. The buffers will frighten the horses.

Instead use Reg Furniss' Forest of Dean pack.
Invalid File ID [15312]

I have a few PO wagons that would be suitable for the route but I normally only release PO wagons to route builders for inclusion on CDs.

I'll see if I can make up a pack suitable for the West of England routes.

Ian, Thanks very much for your help. I've now downloaded the revised version 2 pack of FoD PO Wagons, which I wasn't aware of. They do look much better.
