Push-Pull Southern Style...

Post by jamiebowey87 »

After all the spate of shots with push-pull on the WCMl, ECML and Scottish Central, I thought Id keep to the theme!

Heres the 16:33 Weymouth - Waterloo on a Summer Saturday during 1984. Class 33s and 4-Reps still exchanged TC trailors at Bournemouth, as the 3rd rails ahdnt yet been laid west...

We join the train as it has just crested the climb to Bincombe Tunnel - we were reduced to below 30mph as 33111 pushes the 8TC formation...

As we slow for our first stop - Dorchester South, a Weymouth bound holiday train nears its destination...

We await the right away from Dorchester South...

The long evenings... clocks go forward this weekend!

We sweep round the curves at 60mph at Worget Junction. Here is where the former Swanage branch joined the mainline. It had been closed as from Furzebrook but is now re-opened as part of the Swanage Steam Railway...

We pass the Southern Manager's Inspection saloon as it heads west...

We make our stop at Wareham, our 33 is struggling to keep time with an 8-TC!

Between our stops at Holton Heath and Hamworthy we are passed by a Furzebrook bound train of LPG empties...

Were now skirting the coast of Poole Bay as we cros over the bridge that marks the start of the steep incline to Hamworthy...

Another view of the bay as we approach poole. A couple of minutes slack in the schedule has allowed us to make up some time...

A Inter-regional express arrives from Newcastle as we await our departure. The Class 47-hauled train will terminate here...

33111 Splutters back to life as 47971 takes a well earned rest having worked the train from Birmingham!

A view of the industrial landscape near the viaduct at Branksome...

We cautiosly clatter over the pointwork as we are signalled into Platform 2 at Bournemouth...

Here is were the 3rd Rail begins! A Class 421 is stabled in the centre roads as we prepare to say goodby to our Class 33...

In the evening gloom of Bournemouth station our Class 432 4-Rep waits for us. We allow our passengers to alight before we couple up, were scheduled 6 minutes to complete the traction change...

The sun catches the rear TC trailer as 33111 is uncoupled. The loco will await a Down train from London to deposit another 4/8-TC before heading back to Weymouth...

The nature of our train changes drastically at Bournemouth, not only due to the change of power, but stopping pattern. Wheras we had run all stations from Dorchester to Bournemouth, we will now call at Southampton Central and London Waterloo only. The better acceleration is also very noticeable as we speed through Christchurch...

A passenger decides on a lighter evening meal as we roll through Brockenhurst at 70mph...

Where we had been struggling to get over 70mph with our Class 33, we now hold the 90mph line speed with ease as we speed throught he New Forest. These 4-Rep units had more power than a Deltic...

Were checked as pass a down stopper at totton. A slightly early arrival has meant weve caught up the Bournemouth - Waterloo stopper...

We are joined by the line from Salisbury at Redbridge...

Were slowed right down now thanks to the pre-ceeding stopper, but it allows us to note a Class 08 doing some shunting in Maritime Yard...

We pass some football fields as a Salisbury bound Thumper DEMU heads west...

We arrive at Southampton 20 seconds behind schedule. In the adjacent platform is the Bournemouth - Waterloo stopper, which will run all stations to Woking from here. Fortunately its booked to depart 3 minutes after we are!

As we round the curve at Northam Junction a Portsmouth - Cardiff working is seen in the hands of a Class 33...

We begin to pick up speed again following the less than urgent line speeds north-east of Southampton Central. our passengers get a last glimpse of the sea before being whisked the next 78 miles to Waterloo in an hour... Who needs Desiros?

We thunder through Winchester well over 90mph, its a high speed dash all the way now!

More to come when I get round to drivng hte rest of the activity!

Goodness me mate!!! What a treat.... and who indeed does need Desiros???

As an aside what time of day in the Activity set up did you use?? I've been trying for a while now to get a sunset act but can never seem to get the time or the weather settings to my liking but you've got em spot on!!!

This Thames Mersey act is coming along lovely by the way, it's been a while since you've run it I can see but my god it's quite something else.... You have to test this when it's done, a night out of the pub would do you well anyway LoL

Very pretty shots Jamie, though I was a bit disappointed - I thought I was going to see an M7 flanked by two old LSWR coaches, or an H with birdcages. :D
Alan

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

Ah, those were the days...

Boring BR blue days?

That was the idea! Im goint to try and fill in a few gaps, got a 47 hauled Reading - Weymouth run half done too. 12 Mk2s is enough to make it work!

 I wasnt born when these shots are set, let alone whatever the LSWR was!

Its starts at 16:33. the environment is Sunrise/Sunset from Kosmos, a utility Id highly reccomend if you dont have it already.

Im with you there mate, but after driving down the M3 the other day, Ill take SWT next time!

The stock is of course from MT's Dale Stewart Memorial Pack, and is well worth it. I hope you can see from the shots here the TC/REP is not a duplicate of the 4CIG from LSE, and is really a amssive advancement! 12 coaches at Eastleigh made my system suffer a wee bit though! As for the route, its been a while since Ive driven on the original Weymouth - Southampton section - bloody sceenic ait it?!

Many thanks Jamie for the screenshots, I particularly liked the commentary which painted as much of a picture as the shots themselves.
Just as I remember it in the 70s.

Very well done

Fantastic! As mentioned the story really helps to bring the pictures to life! :D

Where can you get the Kosmos environments from?

We rejoin the train as we speed through Micheldever, the oil sidings seen to the left. These were part of PLUTO (Piple Line Under The Ocean) built during the war by the allies to get fuel over to Normandy. They were in use until the 80s as far as I know, but are now closed?

At Worting junction were slowed down by signals protecting the line from Salisbury and Exeter as we ascend the bank to the flyover. As Reading - Portsmouth Class 33 + 4TC passes us below...

Were back up to speed as we thunder through Basingstoke. A 4Cig waits with a semi-fast to Waterloo...

With a closing speed of nearly 200mph we pass a Class 50 on the 18:10 Waterloo - Exeter St Davids...

A 2minute pathing allowance at Woking means we arrive slightly early and are checked as a result as we allow the precceeding Portsmouth train to clear the platforms...

Were back on our way as we pass Weybridge. Just keeping around 80mph as the signals occaisionally drop to double yellow ahead of us...

We race past a suburban service in the hands of a Class 508. With the Class 455s making an impact on the SWML, it wont be long before these units are transferred to their intended home on the Merseyside...

We pass Surbiton as the evening gloom begins to turn into a more noticeable darkness...

The urban landscape illuminates the skyline as we roll past Wimbledon, completely contrasting with the landsacape earlier in our journey...

Were under signal check and slowing down for a TSR near Wimbledon Depot as a 4EPB is put through the carriage washers in readyness for monday morning's rush hour...

We pull away from the TSR as the spotlights illuminate the Depot. A less than hasty run from Surbiton has now made our 19:11 arrival time at Waterloo seem alot less of an easy task as it did when we were holding well over 90mph before Woking...

Were racing a brand new Class 455 as we approach Clapham Junction. Restless passengers begin to clear their belongings back into bags in readiness for the scrum to get rhough Waterloo ticket barriers...

A Class 508 and 4Vep share the lights under Waterloo's canopy as we draw to a halt. Suffiecent recovery in our schedule has meant we arrive within 60 seconds of time, having traversed the 79miles from Southampton in just 1hr4mins!

Thanks for the kind words everyone, glad you enjoyed the shots & story! Ill be uploading this soon, along with a couple of others hopefully. If anyone could help me test it (and any others?) please drop me a PM. The DS tribute pack is required, as is LSE & DC5 + about 15 downloads from UKTS.
