72xx in action

Post by saddletank »

A big thank you to Robin Howell for a loco with astonishing amounts of power (wheelslip, what's wheelslip?), to Gordon Mac for a simply lovely looking route and to the many builders of coal wagons - guys now we are starting to get trains that really look the part!

Very, very nice more GWR 8)

As a 'Cornwall' fan I wondered if a 2-8-0T was planned as they worked clay trains down there for years
Cheers

Sorry Eddie, with this beast at nearly 1/2 a kilometre long you will have to wait at Ruabon. The singled line above there is closed for essential wartime coal traffic. At 14mph it might take me a while to get to you and I can't guarantee the rails will still be same distance apart as they were when I found them ;)

There will be one by the end o fthe week. I am just doing some finishing touches. It will be 4202 built around 1912 but in slightly later condition. Apart from the obvious lack of trailing wheel and extended bunker there were several other important and detail diferences between the 72xx and 42xx class. Although some of the later 42xx and particularly the 52xx were very similar to the 72xx.

Thanks for the kind words Martin. Yep they had some grunt (I might have over done it a bit though). Aparently anecdotal evidence suggests they rarely did slip regardless of load and had better traction than the 28xx tender loco due to the weight of the coal and water over the driving wheels. But somewhat curve shy! On the main trains out of Wales 60+ wagons were the norm for these.

For Robin H - there is something missing from this engine and it took me a while to put my finger on it. I think that you have made it so dirty that the copper capped chimney and brass safety valve cover don't show. Just a hint of these gleaming through the layers of grime would work wonders for the character of the engine. OK, so maybe in the 30s safety valve covers were painted green, but with some polishing that soon wore off. Hint, hint.

I agree that very often the safety valve covers did get the paint worn off but there is no copper there on the chimney to get polished I'm afraid as all these locos had full caste iron chimneys as were the 42's and 52's past a certain lot. I'll have a word with the maintenance forman and see what he can do!

What a great route to run it on (despite weight restrictions!) I have just got the Bala route myself over the weekend and its great running the GWR stuff on a route with the proper atmsophere. Hopefully soon to be joined by the Highworth branch.
