Erm, doubt it, the rails are long gone. and it was in Nestle ownership before closure.Easilyconfused wrote:Sadly, Rowntrees have been exporting their jobs elsewhere in the EU with massive job losses in York (I keep on top of things there since No. 1 daughter is at Uni there) so can we expect continental cargo-waggons to haul off the heavy machinery to Poland ?
That would be a good activity - MEP to London and then MT Great Eastern to the docks for the ferry crossing.
Kindest regards

What? The Foss Island branch exists no more?chrisiveson wrote:Erm, doubt it, the rails are long gone. and it was in Nestle ownership before closure.![]()

I'm afraid so. The branch finally closed in October 1988 when the last remaining traffic flow, an occasional oil tank or two to a depot on the former Derwent Valley Railway, ceased. Rowntrees had gone over to 100% road transport back in April 1987 and the Redfearn National Glass factory had also long gone by this time. The Foss Islands Goods Depot closed as a public freight depot as long ago as August 1984. The trackbed is now a cycle track which continues on to take the old route of the DVR from Hallfield Junction, within sight of the Foss Islands goods yard until very recently when a new Morrisons completely obliterated any trace of the final half-mile of the branch.
