In short, yes it can be. A particular bottleneck is Crewe.
A few golden rules though:
Use train store.
Reduce MSTS settings. (if necessary)
Save regularly.
Store as many acts. as possible to reduce start-up time.
Thames Mersey has been out for a while now so you will find lots more advice if you care to do a bit of research. :D
