They were fine on the LMR....those WR boys broke them.

Good news the original engine still exists.

Thinking this thread was about a bowel-related problem I thought I'd take a peek out of sheer curiosity. Interesting about DP2 but I must admit to never having heard a class 50 being referred to as a "log". As a saddo who used to bash them in the early 80s I must have led a sheltered life, because I've only ever heard the popular nickname which suggests that the noise generated by the engine might somehow loosely sound similar to a well-known make of vacuum cleaner. I've yet to hear a 50 that sounds like one of those but there you go! ;)

The name log is due to the general shape, and to some,a derogatory term.
The hoover name was used on the original un-refurbished 50s,due to a sucking sound, which i think might have been sommit to do with fans on the brake rehostater(?)

The most common nick name I heard for them was 50:50's because that was the chances that you had of getting your destination without incident!

I can not wait for the 50's I can Remember summers in Dumfries
Going down to the station every night to watch the London Train Coming in & most nights it was a Couple of 50s or a 50 & 47 I thought they were a fantastic Loco You could hear the power in them hauling the train out of Dumfries station

I fondly remember double headed 50's thashing up and down the WCML between Crewe and Glasgow in the months running up to electrification of that section.
