Nothing too elaborate. Just a few shots on explore mode of SWT 159018 heading for Basingstoke and a Eurostar joining the line from London Victoria heading for the tunnel.

Nice shots - but I don't think I've ever seen a 12 car 159! (Unless anyone wants to prove me wrong)

Nah, it was just something in the standard consist I was trying. made up a 24 car consist of my own as well.
They usually run in 3's or 6's and occasionally as 8's with a 158 attached.

Although in SWT's new charter they are aiming to start running 9 car sets and then 12 coach trains out of Waterloo in the next five years or so and will extend a lot of their trains when they inherit the current international station when Stratford opens.

9 car sets do run now, as do some 12 car desiros. Their has been the instance i think that their has been more than 9 cars but very rare

Never known more than a 9-car set, no need for it as far as I can see.

You can catch the 8 car every weekday morning at Waterloo at 7.50AM - usually platform 8

I went on the eurostar back in 2004, I was upgraded to first class free ^_^. I remember waterloo very well! Shame I can't get it to work, keep getting an error

On the mood of 159's they run services which have a turbostar at the front and I think a 4 car 159 at the back. I'm sure they run the service: I went on it Saterday night from waterloo to woking (my home station).

Tommorow I'm going to Borugh (near Hull). I'm going GNER (probably 91 with Mk4's) to doncaster and then Northern (probably a sprinter) to Borugh.

On the screenshots mater they are very good. JUst make sure you close the track monitor and also a little question:

On the 159 screenies it says on the track monitor mph: fine.

On the Eurostar ones it is in km/h.

I went on the eurosatr last Thursday and Saturday aswell and I remember the line speed being in mph.

Wonder why it's in km/h?

None of the South Western stations can take 12*23m except Waterloo International, with some odd platforms at other locations whose length is purely historical. Their usefulness is virtually non-existant - who'd want to run a 280m long train if you can only call at four platforms on the entire South Western?!

That said, many more stations can take a 240m train length (12*20m or 10*23m). The general plan is to extend all 8-car 450/455 formations to 10-car sets, mainly on the Windsors which is presently a wholly 8-car railway. The Mains at least have some places to allow skip-stop 12-car formations to run in the peaks, plus the 10-car fasts/semi-fasts.

How?

By spending lots of money - between £70 and £325 million. Plus 160 extra vehicles. Still, Network Rail think it's worth it. There may be the small matter of Waterloo, such as a £1bn rebuild...

AFAIK Bournemouth *can* just hold a Eurostar, pfms 3+4... 3 can hold 13 cars, 4 can hold 11. This is of an mk3 bodyshell (so 442 base)

EDIT: Just re-read your post, its rather contradictory in the first sentence!

I specified stations as opposed to individual platforms - differentiating between a platform which can be used in one direction from a station which should have both directions available on more than one platform. That Bournemouth Platforms 3&4 can take a Eurostar is irrelevant - you can't call it at enough stations en-route to make the exercise commercially viable. And if you were to, you'd run out of money upgrading other Main Line stations to take 373s long before you can put any money into solving the real issues of the Inner Subs, particularly the Windsors.

BTW - if you are reading from the Quail, read the key on the first page - the number refers to 20m lengths. RotP states 522m, so best call it 20*23m to allow for a margin of error.
