I would like to see D1010 & D1048 in blue as they were in the last four to be withdrawn in 1977
1048 was realy scruffy as far as I remember I was 8 at the time !

My memories of commuting into Paddington in the late 70's certainly were of pretty weathered locos of all classes. Did Western Region get other peoples cast offs?

These are excellent as I never saw a shiney Western. Class 42's always looked smarter and 35s Hymecks as I recall got a respray or two.........was that really 25 years ago!!!!

Hi Geoff
Certainly the diesel electrics were often 'cast offs'
But the reason for the Westerns shabby appearance was the very aggressive carriage wash at Laira.
For me it always added that sun bleached Devon look, but maybe that was just my imagination

Geoff,

It wasn't 25 years ago at all. It was nearer 30 years ago!!!!
Warships finished December 1972.
Hymeks finished March 1975.
Westerns finished February 1977.

The memories linger on of holidays in Devon. Sun, sea, sand and hydraulics. :D
Ahhh. Happy days.

Best wishes.

...Now you come to mention it....yes it would be 30 years! I must have seen theses Engines commuting from Westbourne Park on the Hammersmith and City because I didn't commute from West Ealing on Western Region until 78. Mainly Class 47's by then and some Hoovers later. Equally weathered, or maybe washed out

There was always something different in the Sidings at Old Oak Common as I recall.
