Then & Now (lots of pics)

Post by Christopher125 »

Hi

Went on a research trip to the Lyme Regis line yesterday, and apart from the mud it was very enjoyable. Here are some of the pics I took, and comparison pics from my route - while the terrain doesn't match up exactly at the moment, this will be dealt with in due course. Hope you like them.

The railway outside Uplyme is still distinguishable, if a bit overgrown since the last train went by.

This is my first view of Cannington, and it took my breath away (even if the concrete is starting to look a bit tricorn-esque  )

Cannington Viaduct is still as impressive as ever, however once again undergrowth has taken over (the deck is covered in bushes and trees as well) Yes, I did scramble up the side of the hill, unfortunately I didn't realise the railway cutting had been infilled and I climbed right to the top

A farm track has used the high embankment for access to the top of the hill (he also uses the bridge underneath as well

This cutting is also infilled (looking towards Lyme Regis - the fire is from travellers parked on the right)

..But the station side is not

The side of the station site is also very overgrown.

A now very overgrown cutting could be mistaken for a stream nowadays. (looking south)

This typical concrete SR p-way hut hives a strong hint as to what the raised ground behind it is.

A final look from the above picture's location down to the flyover at Axminster.

Critical comments are, as ever, welcome.

Good idea to show the comparisons. Excellent work.

Good luck with completion.

An excellent series of images - I'm drooling with anticipation! Coincidentally I was down that way on Saturday and I can confirm the quality of the mud. Had a very nice pint of Otter at The Bottle up above Axminster, home of the World Stinging Nettle Eating Championship. No kidding, and I thought the folk up on Mendip were a bit odd ..

I had planned something similar with Highworth but since all my field trip photos just show bushes, trees and mud I didn't think it was worth it. I began comparing quite a few shots but got so depressed I scrapped the idea.

Although I don't know the area at all, the real life and simulated pictures give a very good impression of what the route used to be like, and its present day state. Keep up the good work! :D

Come on now. I spotted a bush that was at least six inches too far to the right in one of those shots. You must try to be more accurate. :D

I'm looking forward to this.

Chris is concentrating on his A-Levels at the moment so there will be less progress shots for a week or two. I am making progress with the final buildings and bridges in the mean time.

A little more patience and I'm sure we'll get it out this year
