What I've been up to (GCR Shots)

Post by Christopher125 »

Hi Everyone

As well as continuing work on the GCR trackwork, finishing the track for the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, doing a few reskins of the Pom-Pom, working out scnery changes for Foxfield, and of course, doing revision for my GCSE's, I've been messing about with the Lyme Regis branch. I would like some constructive critiscism for these pics, as I am unsure about the scenery in places. These show the first 2 miles or so out of Axminster (apart from the farm, which is near to Combpyne viaduct).

I hope you like them, although all comments are welcome. The more encouragement I get, the harder and quicker I work  (I'd just like to point out that there is no noticeable framerate hit when running through the finished areas)

Great work!

Chris, what trees and trackside plants are you using?

Hi,

Not really the kind of route I would use, but I have to say the trackwork looks very tidy, I like how you have the platforms perfectly inline with the track. The scenery is also very detailed. Keep up the good work!

Chris,

Everything looks OK. I recognised that last view straightaway, even without the viaduct.

You seem to have captured the feel of that part of Devon.

Hi

All default, apart from Ian Jenkins trees and a few hedges from Highworth. (the main hedges are the US deciduous background 4)

Thanks John, I have spent little time on the last one, as I've been concentrating on field techniques, however, there were a lot of objects due to that on the tile, however the rest of the area is almost all fields so should be fine. (do you have any idea on speed limits, or what the highest speed allowed was?)

Very nice! :)

If you are looking for suggestions, I see you have used manually placed embankments for some of the track, these look much better than just using 'y' to do them. Is it possible to replace all the cuttings/embankments, rather than only some of them? Also, is there any way to have the brown/green texture blend smoothly into the green colour of the terrain, rather then the sharp join?

That said, those really are only minor points, that don't really detract from the route as a whole. I'm struggling with cuttings/embankments for my route at the moment, hence why I mentioned it!

Hi Jon

I could use the embankments for most of the route, but some bits would be really difficult to do, and aren't the time trying to do. I don't belive you can blend the join, (unless you use mosaic to put the texture used on the embankment onto the ground), but you can disgusie by placing bushes etc along it that make it look less stark.

Ok, thanks for the reply - the closest I have got to blending is to have two different objects, the embankment and another with fences on either side and a flat polygon on the ground between the fences. Using a alpha channel with a smooth gradient from black to white to black again it might be possible to get a smoothish transition, but the join would look different depending on the height of the embankment. I haven't tried placing bushes/trees yet though so that should help.

Anyway, I'm dragging this wildly off topic so you better post some more screenshots to get it back on topic

Hi Martin

Bit of a harsh tone wasn't it? As we are discussing the screenshots and what are in them. However I dont mind this thread being move into Route Building if it has to be.
