Prototype Deltic at English Electric Preston

Post by class40 »

Hi, does anybody happen to have any pictures of the prototype Deltic (DP1) at English Electric's Dick Kerr works at Preston?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Terry, the reason I was looking for pictures is because when I was a small boy cicra 1959-1962 I am sure that I saw the prototype crossing Strand Road to go up the incline (Oil line) to Preston Station.

Those were the days! :D

Memories... I too was just a slip of a lad (would only be about 7 - 8!) when I was taken to the Vulcan works by my Uncle (who worked there) and allowed to sit in the cab... would be '63 or '64 I think. I seem to remember she was looking rather shabby at the time... but the sheer sense of POWER around you was truly amazing.

You lucky sod! :D

I know what you mean about the sense of sheer power - every time I go to the NRM I am always amazed by the Deltics size - especially when you are standing at trackside level!

RE: Sitting in cab. I managed to sit in a dead class 37 stabled at Preston in about 1980 also had a very short cab ride (about 10 yeards) in a class 08 at about the same time.

Don't forget that DP1 spent a fair bit of time with Napier (Atherton) and also, why was it painted powder blue in the first place?

Something to do with cookers I think
