Wantage Tramway

Post by fadedGlory »

Here is a preview of the first rolling stock of the Wantage Tramway: Engine no. 5 'Jane' and four-wheel coach no. 5. It needs a bit more testing before upload.

The models are based on drawings but I don't have much information on the colour schemes in use. If anybody knows more about that I would be grateful.

There is more to come.

I will just be making rolling stock and scenery items. The plan is that saddletank will build the actual route once he's got Highworth out of the way (which hopefully is soon). Unfortunately his PC has packed up so he can't comment himself right now!

The loco is Shannon at Didcot, Jur's model is Jane, however both are the same George England Built design, it is the only standard guage loco left from that builder's I believe, (Ffestiniog has 4 2ft ones).

The livery on Shannon at Didcot would be approprate, again as they are the same design

David, Shannon and Jane are the same loco! 'Jane' was an informal name given by the people of Wantage, the engine never officially had that name.

After closure of the line it was bought by the GWR, restored in Swindon and put on a plinth in Wantage. Eventually it was moved to Didcot, at the end of the sixties I believe.

I have painted her in the livery she now has, but I don't know if that is authentic for her Wantage days.

Looking good Jur. I have e-mailed you with some notes on the livery of the loco as it was pre- it's 1939 Swindon overhaul and repaint, and the coach livery too (which was mid-green and cream).

Coach #5 looks great, you have got the curly scrollwork at the tops of the side windows absolutely spot on. There were 3 horizontal black iron safety bars across the bottom half of the end windows though (below the conductors bell box), presumably to stop passengers breaking them when moving about the open end deck? (see Nicholas de Courtais' book, upper picture p.28 ). See also a large '5' numeral on the coach ends in that picture too, and the conductors brass(?) handbrake lever on the open deck.

Mmmm... is that a hint at a route project? Excellent if it is! That cranky little line was wonderful!

'Fraid not Martin, I really only realized the joke a few seconds after I wrote it. Brill an't that far away mind, although round here we give people from Brill funny looks  After all its a hill and windmill and not much else these days

If anyone would like to take up the Brill challange, good luck to them. I wish I could be the old "so much to do, so little time" applies.

Thanks Martin, I have changed the colour of the coach to green as you said.

I have also applied a light weathering, but not too much. That same picture of coach 5 shows it actually in a nice clean condition. I have also left the engine fairly clean, I find that too much grubbiness tends to obscure some of the details. I also think I may want to keep the lettering, it livens up the engine which otherwise may become a bit dull.

I have added the other details as you suggested, and a few more. I will email you the engine and coach shortly so you can test it out if you want.
