Claughton Progress

Post by eddief »

Well I thought it was about time I started a thread to show the progress on the Claughton, 3 screenshots for you first of all, 1 of the loco and 2 tenders.

<IMG width="800" height="578" SRC="http://www.atomic-album.com/showPic.php/22622/Claughton Progress 2.JPG">

Above The loco latest, the wheels are complete (I have seen a photo the confirms no counterweights were fitted), the frames are a basic shape at present and will be re-done at some point. The bogie is also the same as is the connecting rod. Work on the loco has stopped for now till I can get into the NRM, therefore to keep progress going I am working on the tenders for the loco.

<IMG width="800" height="584" SRC="http://www.atomic-album.com/showPic.php/22622/Claughton Tender 2.JPG">

Above This is 1 of 2 tender types fitted to the Claughtons. It is described as a "Whale Tender" on the drawing I possess. This features all the wheels, and a basic top (fully shaped but will be improved soon). This brings us on to the 2nd type of tender, I know some of you might want to run backwards with this loco so I've made you this tender...

<IMG width="800" height="581" SRC="http://www.atomic-album.com/showPic.php/22622/Claughton Tender 2a.JPG">

Its basically the same as the first tender except its fitted with a wind shield for reverse running (a small bit of extra work to make something different).

All comments are welcomed :)

Well its been a while coming but its getting closer, the Claughton has been seen in steam at the works today.

It didn't move very far just up and down the yard to check the motion and other matters, some motion parts need fine tuning and the tender wheels are sticking (see TSM forum) but other then that it was a good test run. There is still a few things to be done before I flood the site with them but it is getting near, touchwood there could be 1 or 2 on the merseyroute CD :).

Yes that is works photo grey its carrying and for those of you who are interested the number and name is 2222 Sir Gilbert Claughton, class pioneer :)

Front half looks a bit tall compared to the tender, apart from that she looks lovely :)

Yeah I've noticed that, but at 2am my mind was not set on altering the tender for a few screenshots, that is part of todays plans, going to be looking at drawings to see where it is too short (though it did not match the loco totally, the main body of the tender only came up to the top of the lower cab sheet from what I can tell).

Hi,

The engine is looking good, but I have to agree with David in that the tender looks out of scale. Have included some pictures and plans they may help.

I have been unable to find a picture or reference to any Claughton that used the wind shield on the tender, Willie Yeadons "LNWR Passenger Engines" covers most combinations, but no reference to the wind shield, I would be most interested any help me with this.

Small boilered Claughton, with ROD tender, changed cab roof edge, to meet Midland Division loading gauge.

Hi Pat

I don't have any photos showing a Claughton with a windshield tender but I thought as I was building the tender it wouldn't take much to add it (never know, a future project might use it ;)). I have started rebuilding the tender using drawings as backdrops to help get things a bit better, it does seem to look more accurate now. However most of my effort is going into trying to get the wheels working properly as they will not go round when using the wheels1 and programmed animations but will when using wheels11 and auto animations but they go flying round far too fast and it looks silly.

Its probably too early to start thinking about numbers for your Calughtons yet, but I thought I'd mention that the following certainly worked the Settle and Carlisle in the early to mid-1920s - at least according to OS Nock's records:

2221 (LNWR number) Sir Francis Dent
LMS 5900 Sir Gilbert Claughton
6001
6005

I'm sure there were more - according to Nock the line had the near-knackered cast-offs from the western division at first and performance suffered, but later the Claughtons - when in better nick - performed well.

Yeah it probably is early for numbers, but it seemed a shame to have these 2 file shapes not textured (the only part not textured on the loco is the cab back but that will get done) though I have plans for 1914 Patriot to be part of the fleet others will be added at a later date. I can confirm 2221 ran on the S&C in November & December 1924 on trials against the Midland Compunds and a Cally engine no:124. I have a copy of the Claughtons performances and some other details from the test (potentional activities? ;))

Good idea - these would sit nicely on S&C 1920!

Thats the plan, don't think I'll be doing the compound trials as I didn't record their details, just the Claughton. But it'll be a good starting point (might do them for the default S&C as well for those that don't have Skipton).

Hi chris.

It is my loco works :), I got bored 1 afternoon at uni so I built it, I didn't originally plan to upload it. When I get the Claughton in a position to show off again I'll take some more pics of the route for you all to see then see if anyone wants it uploading. Its only real purpose is to test run locos, little scenery and no signals in sight.

Cheers Chirs, I'm going to post a photo of the track in the activity editor so it gives you some idea of what its like :).

As for the Claughton, the motion settings are being fine tuned with the aid of a lot of tubes (by adding tube's to corresponding points in all the motion and 1 wheelset it makes lining up the motion a lot easier so it should be right this time, doing the left hand side at the moment and once that is fine I'll copy the idea to the right hand side :)).
