Manky old Manky old MANKY OLD 47

Post by allypally »

i wish i had a camera with me to have captured but was caught short, so ill describe it anyway :D
i just got a 323 in Wton having returned from shopping in Birmingham. The message on the tannoy'The train now arriving at Platform 3 is the *cant remember what time* First North Western service to Birmingham New Street. I heard a banging and a clattering in the distance but thought that wasa shunting thing at Oxley. Well imagine my surprise when instead of a 175, the most awful looking 47 clanked in with some old FGW MK3s. Panels were hanging off it and it was literally black with .. The coaches didnt look too good either, looked like they had just yanked them off the scrapping tracks at Crewe. The passengers all looked queasy!

Must be from the strategic reserve!

Seriously, these are the best trains. I dream of a manky old 47 instead of the same old 321 drawing up. That would be heaven. I once had a class 15 and a rake of maroon mark1s take me from shenfield to Liverpool Street, and that sounded like a bag of spanners too! :D

Reminds me of the changeover period on the London-Brighton line, when a pair of 'COR's would turn up on a BTON-VIC slow instead of the booked 'VEP's. Ride was awful, but the seats were much more comfortable, and you could get a compartment to yourselves, too!

nah, it wasnt in virgins, i think it was in EWS or even RfD. I asked station blokes and they said the 175 had broke down after Chester on a prvious run. But this one was truly awful. The coaches were too. why did they have FGW coaches in North West england? they reaqlly did look like they had been yanked off the scrap track...

The website's updated since I posted the link 47732 is about halfway down the page.

The 47s are used on 2 (?) return Holyhead - Birmingham trips each day using stock hired from FGW

Cheers,

Andy.

Yeah, the coaches have been used on that route for a while, I saw them last year as they would sometimes run the Manchester-Holyhead services too - the Great Western MkIIs were in a disgusting state - it was near impossible to see in or out (though it was good to hear a 47 powering up to leave Manchester Picadilly!)
