Atomic Systems

I need a number for the loco below, it's a North Staffordshire Railway Class B 2-4-0 Tank. 21 were bult between 1881 and 1895, the last being withdrawn from service in 1933. An LMS number would also be helpful.

I've got a photograph in Railway Modeller Feb 2003 showing a O' gauge Class b running with number '2' also the colour is more of a maroon but maybe my monitor isn't correct...also I've only seen a few notty models and never one in the flesh. Anyways looks amazing and really gald you're making so many interesting pre-group locos.

Beautiful little engine, lovely work Terry. I too would hazard that the colour is too orangey, could use a bit of "purpling down". Sadly while lots of companies painted their engines red or maroon, most were very similar shades to each other so you do not get much variation.

Thank you for the numbers James, can get it finished now. I based the colour on a photo of a model on the net, but the description in Railway modeller does state crimson lake. I've done a crimson lake one for the LMS version so it's no problem to change it.

Essery's "LMS Locomotives" Volume 2, shows only 12 built. Numbers that are known, NS 27 (LMS 1443), NS 71 (LMS 1450). Other known LMS numbers 1442/7/8/50/1 in early LMS crimson lake 1923-1927. Plain black after 1927, unconfirmed in black 1441/2/4. Class extinct by 1933.

It wouldn't have been NSR number 2, as that was the 0-6-2T of 1921 (? - doing all this from memory) that ended up with Manchester Collieries and hence lasted long enough to be preserved - in fact it was painted in NSR livery whilst still in industrial use for some exhibition or other. That would back up the info from Brian.

I've seen the preserved 0-6-2T and it is indeed in a crimson lake that's very close to Midland red. It's currently on loan from the NRM to the Churnet Valley Railway and you can see a picture of it at http://www.churnet-valley-railway.co.uk/NEWNO2.JPG albeit the pic doesn't show off the crimson too well.

Perhaps there were two-2's :)ha. Well anyways this number 2 was a Class B designed by C.Clare and built in 1890 at Stoke Loco Works, according to the article, and was rebuilt in 1906 with a standard boiler and later became 1447. The author seems to have done his research and refers to a few books , the HMRS and the North Staffordshire Railway Study Group so it should be fairly reliable info.

Which route has this industrial background?

It's part of my own ficticious route. That view is mostly made up of backdrops.

I'm uploading with nos 2 and 7, if they are incorrect I'll upload another texture file to correct them.

I've also done two in LMS livery, one in NSR early light green livery and one in NSR intermediate russet livery. I'll upload them all once I get the numbering sorted.

Give me about nine months to complete current projects ( including the Glyn Valley Tramway) and you never know, I just might . Well something short anyway. Suppose the Churnet Valley would be a popular choice if it's not being done by then.

Yep, that's a nice texture Terry. I seem to be downloader #1, heh heh. I love your modelling style with those subtle curves, esp around the base of the safety valves, very tricky shapes to get right and you have them spot on.
