A question for "da 3rd Rail Massiv"

Post by Kevo00 »

Having realised there are a fair few people around here with good knowledge of 3rd rail country I thought this might be a good place to ask this:

Which routes in the southern area are dual electrified, meaning that they have both third rail DC and overhead AC electrification?

I don't know the southern terribly well (being ter northerner lad!) but always thought that only some small patches in London had dual electrification. My question comes about because in the photographer episode of "People Like Us" with Roy Mallard there is a scene in a station, supposedly Winchester (I'm sure it can't be!) which is dual electrified, leading me to think that there must be some considerable route which is but I don't know where.

Anyone know?

Not aware of any routes that have both except where they change over, I might be wrong but I think Farringdon is one such place, Selhurst Depot did have a short section of overhead ac for testing 319's.

Can only think of Farringdon, some track outside of Euston, and track this side of Euro Tunnel. What you probably saw was shots of several places mixed up, they do that a lot on TV

Farringdon is the only location at a station - there is dual voltage at Dollands Moor where the Eurostars switch between 3rd rail and Overheads and as well as Selhurst, there is both forms of power leading into and out of North Pole Depot. Incidentally, there is also a section of belgian 3kV DC overhead in North Pole Depot too! There used to be a section of Overhead in Eastleigh Works - almost certainly still would be as they do work on ac stock.... The other dual voltage lines are those such as Wimbledon Park where there is dual running of LT and SR EMU's - then of course you have Euston with 3rd rail and overhead for the Watford Silverlink services.... most of which simont has already covered!

Selhurst actully dosen't have OH. It's all third rail, unless it's all hidden in the depot.

Watford - Croxley - Hampstead has 3 rail too left from the old Underground route but I think the EMU's operating on that use OH, unless i'm wrong. did see the 313's on it last time as thier dual voltage. No third rail at Euston, unless they just laid it there in the past two months.

North London line has third rail in places according to my book, in fact the whole route is supposed to be third rail, but Willesden Junction Upper Level is OH only.

I *THINK* most 3rd rail areas and OHL that have dual traction units normally have sections of both in the depot. According to my maps, Farringdon also has bonded 4th rail as well.. Not sure why..

Been to Euston Many times, never seen third rail anywhere around there. It's all OHL.

The definatly used to be a 3rd rail at Euston when the 501s worked the NLL services - I'm pretty sure it remains for the Slink 313s.

Been on a railtour out of Euston with a 4 CIG unit in the past so it was definitely there once! Also worked as a guard on a Watford - Portsmouth Harbour special which ran ecs Wimbledon - Richmond (Reverse), Willesden High Level (Reverse) and Watford and return, then via Wimbledon Park and the SW mainline to Portsmouth formed of two VEP's....

313's were using the OHL on my last visit, I would like to know where abouts the Third Rail is, i'm sure the Third ran between Watford and Hampstead then carried on for the Tube.

OHL/3rd rail on North London

Post by lacorbiere »

3rd rail runs from Richmond to Acton Town where the units change to OHL for the run to Woolwich and Stratford.

So Acton Town has both 3rd rail, OHL AND a level crossing that spend far too much time shut because of the time it takes to change between the two for the 313 units...

I've seen pictures of a 4-COR and 2-BIL units on these routes on excursions... too young to see it for real
