Coach designations

I've downloaded loads of Mk1 to Mk4 carriages over the last year or so and I haven't got a clue about the designations used. Like BSK, FK, RMB, that sort of thing. Could some kind soul explain this to me please?

I have the same prob. When adding the new coach sounds I never know which one of them would normally go at the end.

B Brake
C Composite
E Either Class
F First
G Griddle
K Corridor or Kitchen
L Lounge
M Miniature
N Non-passenger
O Open
P Parcels or Pullman
R Restaurant
S Second or Sleeper
T Tourist (open stock for common people )
U Unclassed
V Vacuum Braked
X Dual Braked
W (forgotton) vacuum brakes with air pipe ?
Y (I dunno )

You will normally find that the readme file with each download explains what the designations mean.

I seem to remember from when I was a train guard in the dim and distant past that the difference between SO and TSO is that the T for Tourist Second Opens were the ones with Tables and Second opens were the ones without tables just 2 a side seating.

The original system as adopted by BR was based on the LNER system, the LMS btw using numbers. I remember being confused until I read an appendix in the back of LMS coaches by Jenkinson and Essery. Over the years it appears that certain letters have fallen out of use and others replaced, so that third class became standard class, etc. So, ones off the top of my head that have been missed:

D-Driving
S-second, standard or sleeper
T-third, trailer (as in DVT)
V-van (as in DVT)
G-guard (as in BG=full brake)

And there's more associated with travelling post offices-sorting vans, stowage? vans, etc. (TSO - travelling sorting office?). Oh an btw, does anyone know about the side-corridor connections on these vehicles & how did they work?

cep = composite either class {i think the p on these stands for plan}
vep = ? either class plan?
bep = buffet either class plan?
cig = composite ? plan?
i have put a ? by the missing bits that we arent sure of,

E for electric and P for powered perhaps? (that's a complete guess, so if I'm wrong, I'm sorry.)

i took my guess from a friends knowledge, he said that 4cop stood for
corridor
open
plan
so thats where i got my logic from.

B Brake if a prefix and Buffet if a suffix.

P Pullman if prefix, Parcels (if in the middle) Pantry (suffix Mk3 sleepers)

(T) as suffix deontes catering trolley facilities TSO(T), BSO(T), RMB(T).

HST's coaches are classed as trailer vehicles amd calassified as Dmu's.

Hence TSO TFO TRUK TRUB TRFB TRSB TGS.

Other DMU codes different to LHCS.

D Driving
L Lavatory
M Motor

Dozed off yet

Post Office vehicles

POS Sorting Van
POT Stowage Van
BPOT Brale Stowage Van

Still awake

TSO's by far the most numerous 3+2 seating.

SO's 2+2 seating often used as additional dining accommation.

Early Mk2's built specifically for such.

Later Mk2 SO's declassified FO's (64XX) series.
