One way to find out where rolling stock you want to delete is used is to use Train Stores "where used" facility. In classic mode select View all Stock Items. Right click the item you want to delete and select where used. This will produce a list of all files that use the item.
If the item is unused you can then delete it. If it is used by other files then you will get failed to read train database errors unless you substitute for the item you are deleting.

I have NOW mangaged to succesfully delete the train.
