More Sub-Aquatic Steam Locos

Post by ianm42 »

This time a couple of unidentified locos found of the New Jersey coastline. Can anyone recognise them?

Is this some sort of 'extreme sports' version of trainspotting
Cheers

Wierd looking things. They look either heavily damaged or partially dismantled for transit. That large dome on the top reminds me of the USA tanks the SR had in the 40s. If WW2 era they may well have been shipped to the UK or N Africa (Morocco/Algeria/Egypt) for the war effort. Any British records of locos despatched but not received to help identify them?

These look MUCH earlier than the 1940's. I would hazard a guess at 1860 or earlier. Small boiler, single driver, odd pony truck very reminiscent of "John Bull" of around 1830. These could be VERY important locomotives and NOT your run of the mill 0-6-0- USA tanks!!

On a further examination the scale on the drawing is very small - they scale out to no more than 2 ft gauge. An error in the drawing maybe? If they are NG locos they could have been built for any kind of small industrial or mineworking use.

Just had email contact with the site owner and he apologises for getting the scale wrong. They are in fact standard gauge engines. I agree Gavin, they do look Victorian, what bits of them you can make out.

The guy will contact me again when they have more info to put up on the site.

Look a bit like traction engines! Just look at the width of that driving wheel!

Whatever these locomotives are, they are a darn sight less recognisable than those Thistlegorm '8F's' I posted up!

The 8F at the wreck of SS Thistlegorm is in pretty good shape, considering that THE DAMN SHIP WAS BOMBED!!!, not to mention the vandals.
Pardon me, boy
Is that the Chattanooga choo choo?
Track twenty-nine
Boy, you can gimme a shine
I can afford
To board a Chattanooga choo choo
I've got my fare
And just a trifle to spare.

Yes, the 8f was in good condition, by the way, saddletank, I'm afraid that I could find no trace of any other 8F's and I've looked into every Thistlegorm website.
My wildest guess could be the other two locomotives could have clandestinely removed, maybe to hide something, but then again, thats just speculation, not fact.

hmm it is very strange, how many were supposed to have been on board?, all i can think is that perhaps they did drop off the ship which then came to rest on top of them.

having said that' looking at the visible 8f you can see the explosion must have been of quite some force, so you would expect at least one of the others to have landed away from the ship area,

also someone mentioned locos from the bideford, westward ho! and appledore railway, would i be right in saying someone has now located them? i'm sure i saw an article a while back but i never heard any more of it.

Yeah, I know what you were talking about, wookey, that was in Heritage Railway last year, and in a more current issue, the "BWH!&A" locomotives were revealed to actually be two American switchers, so the locomotives disappearance remains a mystery.
