"Old, Dirty and Late"

Post by XPTE »

Does anyone remember an edition of Panaroma called "Old, Dirty and Late" which looked at the state of the railways? The 50 minute programme was originally broadcoast on BBC1 in 1993, and it was then shown on UK Horizons in 1996 or 1997.

This is a long shot, but don't suppose any of you have a full recording of it by any chance? If so, I'd be very interested in buying a recording of it from you. Good price paid. PM me if you can help me. Cheers.

I remember a comedy series on ITV called "Young Gifted and Broke" about a bunch of YTS students. Only lasted 1 series.

Seriously though, if anyone has a recording of that Panorama programme let me know. Good price paid providing the picture and sound quality is good! There was loads of footage of old diesel and electric hauled loco's back in the BR days. Wish I'd have taped it at the time.

We've probably had a good few new members join us since that last posting on October 26th. So just a reminder, I'm still looking for that "Old Dirty and Late" Panorama programme from 1993. :D

I know its been mentioned before but I taped all of that "BBC Railwatch" with DJ Mike Smith and the all of that "Going Loco" which featured rival radio 1 breakfast DJ Mike Read, plus the "famous" Equinox ducumentaries "Running to time" and "Trouble on the line". I have since taped over "Railwatch" because about three years after it looked . (Paul Coia etc.) and I was working with this stuff everyday anyway. Big mistake, lots of regrets.
Cheers

Hello,

Well, why don't you ask at BBC? They certainly got the tape...

Your mum recorded Pavarotti over it? Oh dear!

Thanks for the suggestion of contacting the BBC about it. I'll write and see what reply I get. Really was a great programme though. Tons of footage of diesel and electric loco's back in the Intercity era.

Been 9 months since I last enquired and again we should have had a number of new members since that time. So just trying again. I'd really like to see this programme again. If you can help please PM me privately.

I emailed the BBC a while ago but got a reply back saying they are unable to supply VHS recordings of any material which hasn't been released commercialy. I'd say the chances of this programme getting released commercially are VERY low indeed!

I think I taped it and probably have still got it, but I will have to go through my tape library to find it as it would no doubt have been stored in with all the films I taped then. Was it the one where they followed an area manager to the site of a suicide and when he asked "Is he dead yet?" (meaning has the doctor certified him dead so they can remove the body) the ambulance crew just turned round and said "Well, his head's missing if that helps".

Still has me in fits of giggles even now.

I also taped many other railway programmes at the time, about the Channel Tunnel, the God-awful Railwatch (which I've not taped over), the Going Loco stuff, Palin's Derry to Kerry Great Railway Journey, Victoria Wood's round Britain jaunt, a number of Money programmes about rail privatisation, any BTF's Channel 4 showed, but it's just finding the things in four bookcases of sideway-stacked VHS cassettes....

I've then got the fun of making a copy. Which of course, Mr Dyke and Home Secretary Straw, I know to be terribly illegal and would never do.

Right.

The programme "Old Dirty and Late" was a part of the 40 minutes BBC2 documentary strand and is I think the programme about the day in the life of the Network South East South Eastern division, and includes the headless corpse incident.

Panorama did "Train Jam" about train congestion, in particular focussed on Birmingham, by Vivian White. It was followed by a "Midlands Report" available only in the BBC Midlands area with Peter Plisner and various local WM Transport "experts" and the Central Trains garden furniture in Soho Light Maintenance depot talking about train congestion. Lots of footage of 323's, Virgin Woks, Virgin Duffs, Centro Sprinters etc, Chris Green and Rob Donald (DG, Centro) providing the love interest.

Newsnight and BBC1 including Gornal's own Sue Lawley did a linked strand of programmes exploring how . privatisation had been called Track Record. GNER Mk4's. Transpenninewheresthefullstopkey Class 158's, odd bit of Virgin stuff. Unfortunately contains Vox Pops.

Which of these is it you're thinking of?

I've found 16 other tapes with varying degrees of labelling, some of which I can identify (Going Loco C4 railway season, Railwatch, a series called Locomotion, Return to Bewdley and Festiniog Holiday, two C4 mid afternoon pre Richard Whitely and Countdown showings of 1970's information documentaries) others of which are a mystery (One tape has just "Eurostar" on it - which I think is a programme about the trains as I have another tape with "Underground to Europe" which I think is about the construction of the Tunnel itself - and another has a mystery programme called just "Railway" - no more info than that...) so I suspect this weekend's telly is sorted for me, just seeing what's on these tapes.

PS Home Sec is David Blunkett. Given this Government's interest in domestic affairs it's easy to mistake the Foreign Secretary for the Home Secretary.

I'd like to see this programme again. So i'd buy a copy too (if you can make one).

Can anyone suggest a good documentary about the UK train network which I could buy on VHS second hand or maybe even new? Im not looking for cabrides or anything, Im looking for somthing like "old dirty and late". Probably a long shot really.

I had a lot of railway orientated stuff recorded. My dad had recorded 6 or more videos of programs such as Away Day, Running to Time (doc. on the electrification of the ECML and the development of the 91s), something regarding the 9Fs, something else about the Midland Railway and the S&C, a programme about a driver called Donald and the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, plus loads of others.
Sadly those and my videos of the aviation series Reach For The Sky (or was it Skies) and the Lossiemouth RAF search and rescue squadron (called Rescue) went missing :(.
