Can anyone please help me on this one....

Post by 40058 »

Hi,

This is one for all you computer experts...and I know it's not train related but...............

I've been helping my friend trying to solve a problem but her PC says it has a damaged registry and although I've completly wiped her drive and re-installed Win 98 still says the same plus vmm32.vxd is damaged.

Is this serious and what can be done.

Thanks a lot in advance..

Try running in safe mode F8 opion 2. Remember to hit F8 while the computer has just started to load i.e when all the mumbo jumbo at the begging starts

Try and find something along the lines of "Norton Fix it" (perhaps a trial version?) that will give you an option of cleaning up the registry rather than simply using "REGEDIT" Fix It will find incorrect registry values and give you the option to delete them or point them somewhere else if needs be. I don't think an uninstall and re-install of w98 deletes all the stuff in the registry as you don't get rid of all the stuff on board.

I don't know what vmm32.vxd does, can't help there.

PM me tomorrow if you want a less scrambled version :drinking:

I've had similar problems but with a different file on w98.

Cheers,

Andy.

It sounds like more memory has been added and the system is trying to identify it. Try switching off, unplugging and take out the memory. Leave it for a bit then put all the memory in - make sure it's the same type.

You can also type MSCONFIG in the run box. Go to the startup tab and make sure the correct options like ScanRegistery and System Tray are checked.

Just deleting all the files from the comp will still leave the registry corrupted. You really need to re-format to get rid of the problem, this shouldn't be much trouble as you say you wiped everything off already so I assume there's nothing on the drive you want to keep.
On bootup as soon as post has detected your memory, hardrive etc press F8
From the choices offered choose command prompt only and press enter
Now type c:\ and press enter
Now type format c: /u and press enter
Message all data will be lost ( this is what you want so agree with y)
When it's finished it will ask you if you want to name the drive, just press enter
Now insert your win98 boot floppy, put the win98 cd in the cdrom and press the restart button to begin your clean install
Dont forget to re-install latest device drivers and directx as win98 will only install dx6.1
