Just a thought... Are there any programs out there that can show what one's installed locos look like, without having to resort to firing up MSTS?

Being custom formats specifically designed to MSTS, no current model programs would show them as far as i know (that arent already MSTS related).

So really a custom one would need to be written, much like the HLModelviewer for Halflife. All a guy did there was put some code together that showed .mdl files from the hl directory, and also showed the animations each .mdl file had assigned to it.

What about Screen grabbing pics of your installed locos via MSTS then viewing through a slide show?

hehe, funny u should say that cos im putting somehting like that together already. But im to picky and want the loco's to be in decent surrounds for the shots, so they look good. Which is a pain cos im running up and down all the routes looking for good foto places

LGVMed Route is a good route for screenshots.

BVE also has one of those object viewers as well. You can view any .b2d or .csv(those are the object formats) file through it and you can zoom in and out and move left and right. Maybe someone could develop one for MSTS which can view .s and .sd files instead.

You can always use the consist editor to scroll through the rolling stock. A utility to display the models in 3D will be pretty complicated.

Maybe someone who is knowledgeable about 3D can come up with a viewer, How about knocking one up over the weekend Paul?

Looking thru the consist editor means nothing to me. I dont know all the rolling stock types and technical names for things, so when i look down the list i havent got a clue what half of the names are. :/

Funny you should say that..... I was just getting back into DX8 programming for another reason (is there room for a 3rd train sim? - just kidding) and this would be a good practice.

There are a few technical problems with ACE file formats and compressed S files, but I can probably find a way round these by calling out to ffedit and makeace ... there are also a few ramifications as there is a single DX8 call which will export the imported file immediately as an .X file format

I was considering doing one before this thread started, it's "simple" enough (if you know how) but it may be a short while off (in between models and 3DC plugins)

Tgatool2 by Martin Wright can be associated with .ace files and is sometimes useful. The version I have is dated 17-01-02 and is an "early beta". I don't know whether it has been developed further.

TGATool2 is for viewing .ace files. But we are talking about viewing the .s and .sd files.
