Choice of SOUND file for early DMUs??

As I continue to work on my COMMON.SOUND folder I have noted that some of the early DMUs call for the use of UKTS_8734 file for BUT sounds, which appears to be related to NIR stock. In addition there is the generic UKTS_16218 file for First Generation DMU Sounds.
Could anybody advise whether one is better than the other, or whether some early DMU classes suit one and some suit the other? Obviously when the early DMU models were released 16218 didn't exist, and presumably it was a choice of 8734 or KIHA!
Alternatively is it a subjective choice, which I would personally struggle with - hence this question!
In hope of a response, Ruf

Well personally I've never used the BUT sounds, but I can say the 1st Generation DMU sounds are much better than the default KIHA sounds. They may be better suited to some units than others, but I think it all depends on how picky you want to be (or how realistic you want the sim to be).

The DMU sound file provided on the payware WSR and MT Evesham add-ons are pretty good representations.
Best available at the moment though freeware wise, by a country mile, are those with the recently released DMU sets from Jon Bilton, though these maybe specifically set up for the transmissions on these units. The link below is just one.

Thank you for the replies.
Upon further investigation the BUT sounds use a lot of the KIHA sounds, and hence the First Generation DMU Sounds look to be the best bet.
I am not looking to have the perfect SOUND or CabView folder, but I do want something that is more relevant.
In some instances it appears that I don't have much choice, such as using the DASH9 default sounds for the Class 67.
I shall continue to work up my COMMON.SOUND folder together with my COMMON.CAB folder. I have now started to rearrange my STOCK folders so that they more clearly relate to these, and hence should make the insertion of my revised SMS and CVF files easier.
I have to reinstall MSTS onto the VISTA laptop, at which time I will install Cambrian 2 plus add-on only. This will allow me to actually continue to drive trains, while I develop my TRAINS folder to suit the above process. The "fun" will start when I start to install the freeware routes and activities, and need to change the stock references, etc.
Oh well the ordered take-away should be here soon, and I will settle down for a quiet evening with my good lady wife.
All the best, Ruf

Having survived the festive season, I am now back on the case of common.sound folders.
There appear to be two suitable sound folders available for First Generation DMUs, namely
UKTS 16218 1st Gen DMU Sound Set
and
UKTS 20193 for Class 120 DMU, which includes the Heritage DMU CabView and Sound Sets
Once again I wonder which is best, bearing in mind that the latter does include references to KIHA sounds. My lack of knowledge in this area means I am unsure whether to use one or the other or whether different DMUs suit different Sound Sets. I assume that both suit 4 speed gear boxes even though i believe that not all early DMUs used these - further research in the railcar website may clarify this.
I would really appreciate some comments and/or advice - I note the earlier one recommending the Heritage_DMU Sound Set?
I labour this point as there are now virtual models for 20 out of the 30 First Generation DMU TOPs Classes, as well as for the Derby LW and Blue Pullman. For the latter I currently use the one in a UKTS file, for which I can't find the file reference - not enough USB ports to plug in external HD!
In hope, Ruf

Ruf,
An adaptor for providing additional outlets from a single USB port is quite cheap!

Noted and already acted on but for some reason the hub didn't like the hardware items. I have a MS mouse receiver, an O2 broadband "pen" and either a Western 250GB external HD or Maxtor 250GB external HD and only two USB ports in the Sony XP Laptop. The hub just wouldn't accept two items?
I just put it down to my ignorance.

Probably should make more effort, but . . .

PS Still looking for comments/advice on the DMU Sounds query!
PPS Also getting to grips with the TOPS allocation as I didn't realise that some of the early DMU TOPS numbers also originally had different/later TOPS numbers; e.g. Class 165 originally referred to Class 111 units.

Initially very confusing!

Oh well I see that I will have to rely on my own best guesses - it will add to the "excitement" as such!

PS: As there appears to be some 220 different Diesel, Electric, Electro_Diesel, DEMU, DMU and EMU classes, I suppose I have set myself an interesting challenge to find appropriate CabView and Sound folders for each - thankfully some classes are variation on others; i.e. different seat arrangements, etc.
PPS: It has certainly broadened my general knowledge, even if not my particular knowledge of specific areas.

Hi
When you have gaps in the file name, you need to replace the space with "%20" so your picture would be:
Regards the sound files, what you could do (if you haven't already) is install them in two different units, and then test them out one after the other - that way you can sample each sound set and make a better decision on what you prefer

Ah . . . I see!
I'll now try redoing the post later.
Many thanks.

. . er, there is always someone who can see the obvious! I only hope my ears are up to the task - bearing in mind that my good lady wife often questions whether I listen to her!!
Once again thanks for the pointer, and I will try and read all of the reply next time!
