Definitely agree with everything that's been said on this topic - though I was able to cope with some of the endearing little foibles of MSTS by trial and (mostly) error, finding the forums proved an absolute revelation for me. Not only was there so much advice out there to begin with, that in many cases any apparently new problem had clearly been suffered by others, and the advice which had worked for them proved equally effective for me. But in cases where some new problem did seem to get in the way of things working as they should, from the dreaded white triangles to the tendency of steam engines to run out of power far too easily, the helpfulness and expertise of all concerned has been immensely encouraging. Now when the system hits the buffers (not literally !) at least I know where to look for an answer - and I haven't found a problem yet where someone isn't able to help. Now if that isn't tempting Providence, I don't know what is !
Thanks again everyone - you all help to make an already absorbing hobby even more enjoyable
Dave

Re: Unsung Heroes
Everything that has already been said I heartily agree with, and the best of it is I have made some very good friends, even though I've never yet met them!
My only gripe? The odd one or two who don't seem to appreciate the lengths people go to in producing models, activities, and routes etc., and moan for the least little thing.
Thank heavens they are in the minority.
Best wishes to you all,
Justgeoff

Usually the ones who have a gripe, are those who dont realise how time consuming and difficult building Routes can be and expect others to do it for them instead, rather than at least trying to have a go themselves.justgeoff wrote:My only gripe? You're spot on with what you said about route building or stock building - I can only say that when one looks at the complexity and realism of routes like the SVR, Bala Hub and Cambrian 2, where one can remember the real thing at more or less the period depicted, it's a lot like watching someone play the piano or the guitar with style and expertise. A little bit of 'I'm sure I could do that given the time and the experience' combined with 'No I darn well couldn't, even if I did have the time, it wouldn't come out nearly as well as that'. Same with rolling stock too. All I can plead by way of mitigation is that when I DO find the time to try and create a simple route or a simple steam locomotive that hasn't already been done by someone else, that's when I shall finally realise just how long the job takes, and just how difficult it is to get it right.
So definitely a case of grateful thanks for all these wonderful efforts, and long may they continue....

When I first came to this forum, I knew absolutely nothing about how the sim worked at all beyond the very basics, and definitely nothing about modding it, and it's only because of all the people here that I ever got to the point where I'm able to take on any of the projects I'm now working on, and to be able to start offering help and advice to others. This community is a shining example of how well people from different backgrounds, and of different ages etc can all come together and work well on a common interest or goal, and I offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone here who's ever helped me with anything, and I sincerely hope that we can continue on like this for many years to come.
