Hi, Please could you advise me which sim to buy my brother?

Post by pankhurst »

Sorry if this is an inappropriate post, I hope I'm not too far off the mark, but I really know nothing about this stuff. My long neglected brother (41 yrs) is completely crazy about trains and computers and I know he would love to get into train simming as a pressie, especially if there's a community of like minded folk out there. I've spent hours trying to figure out which system to introduce him to - basically I want to get him the best, most popular software out there, but due to my lack of knowledge, I still don't know. I suspect I should go for the Microsoft Train Simulator with some add ons, but then I noticed on this forum there's two versions - 1 and 2 ?? Which one should I get?

Please, would someone be so kind as to advise me? I'd be very grateful!

Thank you!

Hi Ruby
You can't get MSTS2 yet, as its not out until next Christmas.
I think MSTS has the most additional routes/ stock.
Do you know what sort of trains your brother likes best ?.... country, steam, diesel, tram etc

Cheers

Hi Ruby,

MSTS2 won't come out until later next year. I would recommend MSTS1 and EITHER a commercial add-on (Great Eastern is very good) OR a selection of Community CD's from UKTS which each "cost" £4.50 each and give your login a full month's of Premium downloads (ie fast with no queue). See the CD Ordering for details.

Cheers

As a cheap entry level sim to see if he likes it, with plenty of add-ons available, and not to big a cost if he should turn out not to like it, I dont think you can beat Microsoft Train Simulator (msts). If he should get hooked then he might want to look at Rail Simulator (RS) in due course, or wait until Microsofts new sim is available next year. There are some others , Trainz and BVE to name two, but i dont have those so cant comment on how good they are in comparison.

It does come down to what he likes and how interested he is in it.

The choice is limited to 3 really. (as BVE is free so you can't buy it)
MSTS.
Trainz.
Rail Sim.

MSTS and Trainz are both cheap to buy now, although Rail Sim has also lost a lot of retail price lately.
Some of it comes down to how good the PC is it will be run on. Rail Sim will require a more powerful PC, but you get arguably better graphics out of it (although not to every one's taste)

I don't know much about Trainz but there is a fair amount of extra rolling stock for it, but I think its generally considered slightly more 'fictional' in the type of routes it has for it.

I'd plump for MSTS, but that's what I know.

remember not to use too many codes for newbies!

MSTS - Microsoft Train Sim

UKTS - This site :)

BVE - Boso View Express, available at http://www.mackoy.cool.ne.jp the sim is 100% free and is the full version, though being a new person to simulators I suggest you give him the tutorial:

http://www.trainsimcentral.co.uk/help.htm

It being free, you can give him that link any day. But as for paying for one, I suggest Microsoft Train Sim as it has the most collection of routes and trains.

The community CDs are found on the main website as said on the 'order CD' page (can't miss it, is on the left hand side, big red lettering)

Cheers,

James.

Hello everyone,

Wow, a fantastic response, just what I needed. Thank you! I'll go for the MSTS 1 with the Great Eastern add on plus another couple. I'll also forward a link to this forum to him too so he can get more involved. He likes the diesels I think, the ones that are around now.

Thanks again!

If your looking for a good add-on, go to Amazon, in the search bar, type the following : brighton portsmouth add on.
You can get this add on between £5 and £20. Just keep an eye out.
