Help for a beginner.

Post by Andy20 »

Hi, well I have finally managed to purchase MSTS! Tried out a few runs on Marias pass and the Settle to Carlisle and I think it is probably the best £7 I have spent :D Nice game and considering it came out 7 years ago the graphics and realism for a game made back then are astonishing.

Forgive me if this is in the wrong place but I need a fair bit of help getting started in regards to downloading and installing routes from this site! I have just purchased a 1 month premium account and have downloaded and installed the Bristol to Plymouth route. What I now need to do is download the neccesary trains and sounds etc... for the route.

I have downloaded the Voyager train for it and just downloaded the sounds file. The problem was though when I tried to install the sounds to the folder that the readme told me to install it to, it said that there had been an error in installing them

This is what it said...

Also another thing I wondered is... When I download the certain routes etc.. I need some add-on packs for them to run don't i? Like for instance I was going to download the Bognor shuttle but it said you needed the South Coast add-on pack which I don't have so i'm guessing it wouldn't work without that?

Sorry that this post is quite long, i'm a bit stuck at the moment though :( and I'm rubbish with these things like installing to certain folders

Can you confirm you are running Microsoft Vista ? It sure looks that way and the error is possibly caused by the well known permissions issues.

If so have a look in http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewforum.php?f=273 for a lot of help and guidance with using MSTS under Vista.
Kindest regards

Reference to temporary internet files leads me to think your are opening the file in the download window rather than saving it.

Create a folder on the desktop called Sim Downloads and SAVE the file to that.

Ok thank you! I am very new to all this downloading and installing into certain folders so i'm struggling.

Another question I need to ask is... On the download page for Glasgow to Carlisle there seems to be lots of different files like Glasgow to Carlisle V2.01, part 1, part 2, part 3 etc... Do I have to download those 1 by 1 starting off at V1 and if so what folder should they go in?

I recommend you set up a folder UKTS (or Sim) Downloads and within that have another folder Routes and within that another folder Glasgow Carlisle. You would need to do a similar thing with stock, there could be hundreds of ways of subdividing these.

When it comes to the point that you've downloaded lots of stuff you can just search for the UKTS reference number to see if you've already got any given item.

Once you've downloaded the Glasgow Carlisle files look for the read me text file and read it. You will probably have to unzip everthing to a temporary folder, and then proceed from there.

If you start installing lots of routes then you will need to use Train Store.

With regard to the Glasgow Carlisle Route there is a single install file for version 2 of the route (file ID: 15086). Just download that and the patch and optional textures at the top of the download page. I think you can ignore all the others (I'm hoping someone will jump on this if it is incorrect!).

As it happens, I lost my hard drive last week, so I'm going to download it now!!

The Glasgow Carlisle single install file is an executable (as are the extra two) so once it is downloaded you just need to run it followed by the patch and then the extra textures.

A word of advice! Do not try to install another route or activity until you have got this one working. A lot of beginners have problems because they try to do too much at once and then, when there is a problem, it is often difficult to find out which download is the culprit.

Right ok, I am downloading that Glasgow to Carlisle now and another thing I wondered is when I downloaded a train for a route... Do I need to download the cab view for it to run properly? Because from what I can see the cab view is seperate from downloading a train. I guess the train download just downloads the train with the carriages?

Hi Andy

You're right - if a particular loco file download says that you need a certain cabview file, you'll need to download that as well for it to work. As you get more experienced and familiar with the way MSTS works, you may find that you want to customise some features of a particular loco - for example, by using some of the many alternative cabviews or sounds available on this site. If and when you get to that stage, come back here and I'm sure you'll find no shortage of members able and willing to offer specific advice. :D

Thanks guys I appreciate that :) This is very complicated for a beginner I have to admit! I have first of all downloaded the Glasgow to Carlisle route. Now I am one by one downloading and installing the class 81/82/83 etc... locomotives and have downloaded the class sounds aswell. So now I need to keep downloading these things that are required for the Glasgow to Carlisle route but there is so many things to remember and download! The mind boggles, locomotives, freight packs, heritage packs, cab views... My head might explode soon with all this info at once

Andy have you thought about buying one of the Community CD's from this site? For a beginner they are a dream, easy to install, all the stock you need with cabs and sounds, and some activities thrown in for good measure usually :) They can get you off to a flying start very quickly. Then as your familiarity with the sim increases you can get more ambitious. You can start by just downloading extra locos and stock and finally think about whole routes.

Be careful not to run before you can walk :)
