Yes Phil I think you are right :) I'm sure i'll find it somewhere for a fiver!

Sorry gswindale I meant Rail Simulator yes :D Got a bit mixed up! lol. Is Rail Simulator a better choice to go for? I know there is quite a lot of routes made for MSTS on here and I would gladly subscribe and pay to download them as I know you can do. Is there a good amount of routes available for Rail Sim?

I bet it would be harder to gey Rail Simulator in a shop though, then again maybe it wouldn't... The thing that impressed me about MSTS though is that even though it's very old now it's still a decent looking game and I like the fact that other trains actually move... I think BVE4 is an outstanding game for realism but it kinda feels unrealistic how the other trains don't move.

Can anyone give me an honest opinion on which is the better train sim... I have been on Youtube this evening and had a look at the game 'Train Simulator' and it looked nice! Is that a better game than MSTS?
Hi Andy
I think it depends on what your trying to achieve.
That is to say, is your main interest to simulate Trains , or play a fancier graphics newer game.
Cheers

Might I suggest that you have a look in the Rail Simulator forum, on this site? There's lots of videos, screenshots and general information for you to make up your own mind.

Personally I concur with Jon, if you want authentic rail operations on a computer, MS Train Simulator is your best bet. If you want to just drive a train and watch all the pretty scenery, try Rail Simulator.

However that isn't to say that MSTS is incapable of achieving great graphical results - indeed, if you take a peek in the [MSTS1] Screenshots forum, there are some fantastic efforts in there. Check out kieranhardy, desiro5 and chrisiveson (to name just three) who seem to show off MSTS to its full potential with every single screenshot :).

If you can get MSTS for a fiver or a tenner (with 2 other games) go for it.
There's enough stuff around for it to keep you busy until Rail Simulator is in the 3 for a tenner section.

Yeh I have had a quick look in that forum :) Seems that MSTS is the more popular game, I am a fan of realism in games so if I can get MSTS for a fiver it would be a bargain for me :D

Thanks for answering my questions so quickly, i'm pretty new to this train sim business so don't really know much about the different games and which ones are held in high regard and which aren't so good.

Just another question... (I hope nobody minds :( ) Is there random things that happen on MSTS, like say for instance you are driving and you are running a bit late or early and there is other trains around... would a signal change because of those other trains crossing lines etc...

The reason I ask that is because the only train sim I have played to date is the BVE ones a I have mentioned and the signals aren't really randomised. Trains don't move so the signals wouldn't change because of that, as they would in real life.

It depends a lot on the activity being driven as to what happens. In some, you get a straight forward run from a to b, but others do throw in things like delayed services in front, having to wait for trains to cross tracks, signal failures etc.

Well I went town today and couldn't find MSTS anywhere so I bought Rail Sim instead. I think I may have made a wrong move though because it's so jerky even on my new computer :(

If any of you have Rail Sim I have made a new topic asking for help in the Rail Sim sub forum so any help you could give me on it would be good :)

I note that play.com have MS Train Simulator by Explosiv at £7.99 with free delivery this morning.

From a personal point of view when I paid £9.99 some 18months ago at a garden centre(?) it was the best tenner I spent.

The even better spend was £20 for premium membership of UKTS - talk about pigs in the doodahs!

We'll conveniently forget the fortune spent on proprietary add-ons!

Can't comment on EARS.

All the best, Ruf

Yeh I might get that from Play then :) Not too sure what to do though as now I have bought RS and even though its too jerky even on my new comp to be playable I'm sure if I make a few changes or buy a better graphics card it would be fine. RS as far as I know is like a newer versian of MSTS, although it seems MSTS would be a better option for me because it would run smooth.

Put it away in your bottom drawer for a couple of years - thats where mine is. In a couple of years time hopefully the rest of the bugs will be fixed and you might have a better PC to play it on. The specification to play it now will probably be easily achievable in 2 years time.

I bought Rail Simulator by mistake and have regretted it ever since. I did buy MSTS from play.com and it was well worth the modest sum it cost. I have never yet found MSTS in local Game shops and the staff are hopeless!

EDITED RAILWAY SIMULATOR!! not Rail Simulator

Hi
I bought it deliberately... on the hope it would be well supported by now.
Luckily I only paid £10 for it.
I also bought Trainz 2004....... but never installed it.
Cheers

I have two copies of MSTS, the first one my brother brought for me in the US about a month before you could get it over here, the next is full UK version.

I also have two copies of RS one was a gift, the other was foc.
