what resolution do you run MSTS in?
Hi,
I run MSTS in 1024x768 but have seen several youtube videos that people have done where they are running MSTS in a higher resolution which looks great, i was wondering what resolution do people normally run MSTS in and how can i run it in a higher resolution as 1024 x 768 is the highest setting that i can select
i use a Samsung LCD widescreen monitor and my gfx card is a Radeon 1950Pro

I'm the same I run MSTS in 1024x768, I think it boils down too how good your graphics card is really. I actually was'nt aware that u could run MSTS any higher than 1024x768,

Re: what resolution do you run MSTS in?
I used to have a 17" Samsung TFT as my main monitor and used to run train sim in 1280x1024 32bit full settings. I bought a 19" Widescreen Samsung TFT to sit next the the 17", the only problem is MSTS streches on widescreens. I decided to then use the 'MSTS in a Window' option, which for me is brilliant! I now run back at 1024x768 32bit.

Hi
LCD flat screens have a 'sweet' setting, that is to say their natural resolution.
It should tell you in the manual.
As I only run MSTS, I paid a little extra for a non wide-screen 19" a couple of years back.
Also it helps if you can connect direct from graphics card, using a digital lead.
Cheers

The key to the whole thing is your monitor characteristics. Since the earliest times, just about any decent graphics card has permitted 1600x1200. In 2001, I started out at 1600x1200x32 with a GeForce3 and 17" CRT.koenig wrote:i was wondering what resolution do people normally run MSTS in and how can i run it in a higher resolution as 1024 x 768 is the highest setting that i can select
My present monitor is a non wide-screen 17" flattie, and I can only get to 1280x1024x32. I have kept the old 17" CRT so that I can still run at 1600x1200 on the intermediate machine that replaced the old 2001 machine...

Im using 1024x768 with 16 bit colour
The editor isnt very happy with 32 bit colour and, to be honest, I cant tell the difference between the two anyway. My CRT monitor cant display resolutions higher than 1024x768

Re: what resolution do you run MSTS in?
I'm running at 1024*768, as I've got a widescreen 15.4 inch laptop. I've set my display up so that MSTS runs full screen in the middle by a profile for my ATI graphics card.

You wouldnt tell the difference as even when MSTS runs the colours are 16bit. Ive done it before and if anything I noticed a very slight difference in the texture quailty.Lad491 wrote:Im using 1024x768 with 16 bit colour

Re: what resolution do you run MSTS in?
I find there are definate differences in 16bit and 32bit, especially graduated colours (which makes sense). As for resolutions, it depends on your monitor really. As textures are usually a maximim of 1024, and cabviews 1024x768, any higher resolution would mean stretching the textures. A TFT with a native resolution of 1280x1024 would have to stretch the picture of a 1024x768 input to fill the screen.
I run MSTS in 1024x768. My TFT does just as good a job of stretching the cab as the GPU. By letting the TFT do the stretching, it's less work for my GPU, and thus better performance.

I've created a desktop shortcut to "Display" from control panel so that switching between 16 and 32 bit is easier. I agree with Gaz that it does show in some cases so it's worth the switch.
When my CTR monitor "died" (with a rather nasty burning smell) after many years of faultless and colour correct performance I was forced to visit the ghastly PC World. The one thing they had going for them back then (They've recently created "The New PC World" who helpfully told me I needed Maplins for a standard cable I was after on my last visit.....) was that they had all their monitors lined up in a row. I got them to put a spreadsheet on all of them and chose my current monitor as the sharpest and clearest there. It turned out to be an LG model with a TV tuner built in. Not much of a feature as analogue TV is about to disappear, but that probably explains why it was only a few pounds more AND it came with a hand control that has an instant Aspect Ratio switch between 4:3 and widescreen. You don't have to run in a window just use the handcontrol. I don't know if LG widescreen TFT's without tuners have an aspect ratio switch but it's worth looking into? I doubt they'll continue these much longer as the tuner will become redundant but if you want one check it out and don't dismiss it as a TV. It was the sharpest display they had.
As far as resolution is concerned I've two boxes and the graphics cards dictate what I can run the sim in. I usually run it as large as I can get it. It seems to have little effect on performance?

I'm running at 1280x1024x32 - 32 bit dont seem to affect my AE!

It is down to the graphics card, my Nvidia 6600 also runs fine at 32bit, but previous cards had to be 16 bit.
Any stretching or reducing by either the card or screen, will cause distortions.
As does running through the RAMDAC, hence my advice to run direct through a digital lead (mine cost me £4 off Ebay).
Also MSTS is default dark, but as this is mainly the only programme I run, I have most settings fairly bright.
TFT screens are inherently bright, certainly looking at a white spread sheet hurts the eyes, having a light on in the room helps.

Im running in 1600x1200 with AFx8 and AAx 8 and I personly think there is a huge improvment over the lower resolutions.
