Just Trains - download vs boxed update issue

Post by cinqo57 »

Hi,

I've recently starting using MSTS again, and I decided to purchase the WSR. As I have broadband I opted to go for the download version from the Just Trains website.

I am very pleased with the route - however, I am having a few problems with the route crashing at Williton and upon further investigation this issue is something that WSR Update 01 is meant to fix. I have tried to download and install this but it appears that I need the CD (which I clearly don't have because I got the downloadable version!)

I can only assume that the version of WSR to download doesn't have Update01 included because of the Williton crashes. I'm now stuck because I can't drive the route through Williton and I cannot install the update.

I would imagine the same problem happens with the SVR and possibly other downloadable routes. I understand the need to protect against piracy but not when it causes problems like this. I'm now stuck with a product that I've paid for and cannot use, unless I can get a copy of the update that does not require the CD or can be activated with the response code etc (I've just contacted Just Trains so I'll see what they say).

I'd strongly advise against purchasing any downloadable versions because you won't be able to install any updates without CDs (why hasn't anyone at Just Trains realised this, and if they have why have they continued to offer downloadable routes?!)

Hi
I would try emailing them.
Two things to try.
Have another CD in the drive when you extract (it may just read the registry).
Failing that the main change is to the sound files from stereo to mono, which you can do yourself using Windows 'soundrec'
(You can try this temporarily by turning down your MSTS sound settings this cuts out ambient sounds)
Finally installing the bin patch with its sound fix may help.
Cheers
Jon

Thanks Jon. I've tried putting MSTS CD1 in the drive to no avail.

I may try your sound fix but I'd like to be able to install the update because of the other fixes, so hopefully JT will find a way to resolve this - perhaps a link to an update that doesn't require the CD (and hopefully they will find permanent solution to this issue so future purchasers of the downloadable versions don't have this same issue).

Hi Cinqo, as John says I would e-mail them, telling them your problem, I've had a look at their site and they ask you to do just this, if any download is not working correctly.
Their e-mail address is enquiries@justflight.com

If you can't get hold of an update that is meant to fix a problem then you could get in touch with Trading Standards. The product as sold sounds like it is not fit for purpose, so in my view the supplier has a duty to provide you with the update, irrespective of the way they have supplied it to you.

Have spoken with Just Trains - the download edition apparently contains the patch.

It's a generic answer, but remember that the Williton tile is very highly populated, as it includes 3 stations. Therefore, try turning your settings down a bit more.

I think Just Trains are lying about the patch being included.

On the F5 windows the Hymek is showing as having 3600 gallons (should be about 400 gallons...see http://web.archive.org/web/200504040512 ... k/wsr.html). I believe this is something that is fixed in the patch:-

"Wrong fuel amount showing for Hymeks. "

Can anyone else confirm that after installation WSR Update 01 that the correct fuel amount is shown?

To be honest, I'm 99.9% certain that WSR update 01 isn't included based on the above.

I'm going to email JustTrains (I think I used their "Contact Us" form last time but did not get a reply") - but they need to remove the need to have the CD to install WSR Update 01 (and possibly other products).

Now hold on there - let's be reasonable. Whilst I can certainly accept that any company might perhaps inadvertantly give out incorrect information, to allege that Just Trains are "lying" to you is provocative, accusatory and, to be honest, won't make you any friends at Just Trains - the very company you may need further help from.

Point taken - I did sound a bit strong and I didn't mean too - I'm a software developer myself and I know things like this happen. This may well just be an oversight.

I'm just a bit miffed that I'm having to waste time on this - I've paid the same price for this peice of softtware as someone who orders the boxed version and I shouldn't have to jump through hoops to install updates just because I opted for the downloadable version rather than the boxed version.

I hope this can be resolved.

I bought the WSR route quite a few years ago in boxed form and have it fully patched - I've just ran an activity and can confirm that the fuel capacity for the Hymek is shown as 800 gallons, so it looks like your version may not be patched. You should therefore contact Just Trains and seek (politely) an explanation.

I doubt that it is fully patched, as I made a patch & released it on the railwaves site, and no one has contacted me about this :-?

There are two patches still available on the Railwaves site, one of which fixes the Williton platform bug:

http://www.railwaves.com/index.php?opti ... elect&id=1

Have you tried installing these into the download version of the route?

Thanks for your replies.

Robert - I am aware of the patch on the railwaves site - I did try this one but it needs the CD also.

Ashley - yes - I have already installed the 2 minor updates at the same time as I downloaded WSR (I always check for any available updates on any software I install). Neither of the minor updates required the CD so I was able to install these without problems. It is another oversight that these 2 minor updates are not in the WSR support area of the Just Trains web site as most people would probably not find them on the Railwaves website.

I haven't had any crashes at Williton since I installed the Bin patch and used the -mem argument. However, I've now seen that there are plenty of other fixes in the main WSR update so I still want to install the update.
