I keep my CommonSounds, CommonCabs, CommonCrews and CommonLoads up in the Train Simulator folder. (Current total 2.2 Gb.) That way they are available to whichever of my Trains folders (I have 26 at the moment, each with a matching Routes folder) is active at the time. They include the .sms and .cvf files so I have aliasing lines in the .eng and .wag files that look like ..\\..\\..\\..\\CommonSounds\\Fscot\\Fscoteng.sms

None of my locos have Sounds or Cabview folders.

Not sure which is more efficient but I think my way saves more space (even though the .sms and .cvf files are not big).

I am currently using the new aliasing feature built in to Route-Riter and it works very well.

I always alias from the Cabview and Sound folders reather than direct.

This allows the camera positions in the .cvf file to be set for the particular loco type and the whistle sound to be included in the Sound folder.

Earlier today I was shunting with a small steam loco which used the Scotsman cab. When I used the cab camera I found myself in the middle of the wagon in front! :D

A quick tweek at the aliased .cvf sorted it.

Also makes it easier to change the cab and sounds when better ones come along.
