Hi
Yes we don't want to be discussing any 'foreign' rubbish.......
Seriously some of the best crafted, highly detailed routes were the East European, I believe these are what inspired Toddington, Lydbrook, L& PS etc
They show how superbly realistic MSTS can be made to look, and still set the standard any other simulators need to be achieving (including MSTS2).
Considering these were released 2004/5 sort of era, the hobby as a whole does seem to have slipped back a little.
Although some as Doug posted, prefer the 'modern' almost clinical looking highspeed routes.
Its all personal choice and mainly dictated where the users interest lies.

Cheers
Jon

Hi
Got me having a look round..........and found Jászkisér - Nagybereg v3.0 has been released. :P

http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 48&t=83132

"3.0 version of fictional Hungarian route from Jászkisér to Nagybereg with three large cities between the two endpoint. Lenght of the mainline is 47km (dual tracks, electrified 25kV 50Hz). There are more branch lines (mainly single track) connected to larger stations of mainline about 30km total lenght.

This package is a complete route with simple installer that contains all the required element, so therefore no orginal routes are needed, and no installme.bat. X-Tracks 3.20 or higher version is required! Unfortunately consist files were out of route installer (ActHU packages are requred.)

Three new activities have been released to the route by Jadro Read more... (An InterCity a fast train and a freight activity) (Az ActHU packages are required.)"

Cheers
Jon

The forthcoming Gotthard Luzern to Bellinzona looks absolutely amazing. That'll definitely be promoted to number 2 in the league, depending on the route's goal-difference.

I think of all the commercial packs out there, Great Eastern is a must. That's my number one commercial route, though any route by Making Tracks is worth a consideration. Having had a sneak look at Scottish Capital Express, that is going to be not just a good route, but like all MT products, full of a lot of great stock!

EB's routes always has that rushed look (floating scenery, missing landmarks), but of theirs I'd say my favourite is West Coast Express. It's shame they're moving onto the Western and Midland as WCE is one of the few routes they do I'd really like to see extended northwards.

In terms of scenery, only one route I know blows away others in terms of attention to detail and that's the West Somerset Railway. Not really into single-line preserved routes, but that £5 spent in Game for this route was well spent. I could spend ages just shunting around minehead soaking up the atmosphere.

Freeware routes? Well, biased towards Glasgow-Carlisle of course, but top dog in my opinion is the ever expanding Dorset Coast.

If you want something totally different, have a look at London and Port Stanley. This is a real miniature gem - an interurban set in 1927 with stunning scenery and plenty of operating potential if you like mixing freight (steam, electric or diesel) with electric motor cars. It installs into its own mini route. You can download it with all the stock you need from http://www.lnps.info/l+ps.htm

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

There is one route that I really do like to unwind with: Seaview.

Yes you do! With your excellent screenshots you'd make it look twice as good! Go on! http://shop.makingtracks-online.co.uk/p ... ucts_id=80

Well I don't really have a favourite route. But high on my list would be Irish Enterprise, Great Eastern, Dorset Coast, also Thames Mersey is good because of the sheer amount of track!

Although I think that some may get put down the list when Mid East Plus, Scottish Capital Express and North Wales Coast come out!

Many thanks for all the replies, when i first purchased MSTS 3 years ago i gave it one try and deleted it as didn't think much of the standard routes, however when i recently saw some youtube videos i couldn't believe it was the same simulation so i dusted off my copy and have been having great fun with it since, after reading the replies i decided to avoid the commercial routes and buy some community cds, this is what i have bought

NorthWest route 2.2 ( have run trains on this already am very impressed with the route and stock

and have these 3 to try

Making Tracks Springfield
Thames- Mersey DVD 4.3
Dorset Coast Route v3 ( i gather this needs to be updated first)

Before i rush into installing some of the above is there anything i need to watch out for?

kind regards

If you havent already done so, you will need to install the Bin patch which helps with memory management and introduces some new features. You will also need to use trainstore to speed up loading times with the big routes. Thames Mersey and Dorset Coast are great routes but very resource hungry and impossible to run without trainstore.

Usual warning about adding new stuff. Take it slowly, add one add-on at a time and test thoroughly to make sure there aren't any bugs before moving on to the next. That way troubleshooting any problems will be easier.

Difficult to pick out 3 favourites (from over 100 installed!) - I tend to go through phases, depending what mood I'm in or where I've visited recently! However, if pushed, I find myself coming back to the following (in no particular order) on a regular basis:

Dorset Coast
Burton-Derby
Great Eastern
(although reading this thread, I need to revisit Thames-Mersey as well!).

Cheers!

I'm glad someone else agrees with my selection.....

As I said on my previous post (last post on page 1 of this thread), it falls into the short branch line route category that tends to get ignored by many.
