Ashburton Branch

Post by solentary »

I am so glad to find the Ashburton Line available. Thank you for your fine efforts at getting it going. I have been a MSTS fan for a long time but I am especially pleased to see this line in the forefront. My wife comes from the Devon/Dartmore area and I still have many relatives in the Yelverton/Buckland Monochorum area. We have spent holidays in the Devon area around Totnes and my former boss retired to his father's farm in Ashburton. I am originally from the Isle of Wight and my first job was as a booking clerk on BR. However, now I live in Virginia, USA. About 25 years ago, I was building a HO railway, with a British flavour, with my son, Philip. Unfortunately, at that time, he was killed in a motor accident and I/we never finished it. However, earlier, when we lived in Uganda, I built a TT3 version of the Ashburton station with a "fiddle yard" in the corner of a room. I had a lot of fun with that.

Now, I have got a long way into setting up your work on Ashburton, from the UK-SIM site. However, even though I have tried to follow the instructions, I am now stuck. Thus, I would appreciate some help. There are some locos, coaches and wagons that either I cannot locate or do not work properly. Moreover, I am a complete duffer when it comes to consists, which may well be causing some of my problems. One final point, for now, is that I ran the introduction, several times, and it kept crashing at the Totnes staring signal. I get a message that it passed a "failed" signal!

I respectfully attach a report from a most recent run of "Route Control" in the hope that it will help you to determine what I may be doing wrong.

Can you help me to get finally up and running please? Sorry to be a nuisance.

I a sorry to hear that you have problems with the Ashburton route; it is a delighhul little route. I gather that you have downloaded the route and stock.
Can I suggest that you consider buying the CD of the route from the UKTrainsim ordering section? Even with the present exchange rate it is well worth it; there are no problems at all with loading the route from the CD And in addition you have the bonus that the Looe branch and Lydbrook Junction, two other GWR branch lines, are included on the CD. All the stock necessary to run the activites is included in the disk
It is called GWR Branch Lines and is as usual around £4.50 , say $10 including

It is worth it to avoid the sort of hassle you are experiencing.

Hi

I can help explain the first two of the problems you are having. The five activities that are not working were written for the original Ashburton route, not for version2, which I suspect is the one you have. These acts don't work becuase the track layout differs between the two versions of the route and the paths from the original are broken when you try to use them with version 2. Technically, it might just be possible to get these acts to work by fixing the broken paths in Activity Editor - co-incidentally this is exactly what I have been trying to do today, but with no luck so far, which is a pity since these acts worked well with version1 of the route and I really liked them.

The services you're having troubel with all call for consists that are mis-named - if you look closely, you'll see that the consists have a space between the name itself and the file type suffix. MSTS sometimes does this when unpacking activities.

Hello David.

Good to see you're still keeping up your interest in MSTS.

I have Ashburton 2 and one of my "hobbies" is trying to fix paths used in an activity that was written for another version. Most of the time it works but sometimes the path is so complex it's difficult (and perhaps impossible) to fix. I've looked in my Asburton folder and see that I still have CP Hemerdon Failure, Ramblers Part 2 and Ramblers Part 3. However I don't have CP Laira Bound and Ramblers Part 1. I vaguely remember trying to fix paths for the last two but not succeeding. It's quite possible that even with fixed paths you might be still missing some of the stock (some of which isn't available any more, I think) so I would recommend waiting for the CD.

To fix the error messages you're currently getting, I would use Route-Riter. I would first delete (or move somewhere else) the .act files for the activities that are giving you problems. Then run R-R's Check All Activities routine. When you get to the "grid" page, down at the bottom there's an "Unused...." button. Click on this and it will give you lists of the unused services, paths, consists etc. Select them and then right click and Move them. R-R will put them in a "Spare..." folder out of the way and your error messages should go away.

Let me know if you need some help with it.

Regards,

Bob.
