Can't acces "Driva a Train" after installing Dorset coast

Post by HugeF1 »

Hi, I have just got given a copy of MSTS, and I installed Dorset Coast from scratch up to V5, using the fantastic guide found here. I did EVERYTHING it said, but now I can't acually drive any trains or access any routes. I did play around with everything before installing DC, and it worked fine. What could be causing the problem?

No, sorry it didn't work. This is rather annoying, as I might just need to reinstall everything. I've done that already, as I thought I'd made an error, but It still doesn't work.....

With trainstore it basically hides all the other activities except the one you wanna play. DC wont work atall if everything is unstored.

Well I deleted Trainstore, as it will cause me problems if I can't run the game with it. I also reinstalled the game, deleting everything (now the game works fine). If someone can tell me step by tiny step how to get this thing working, I would be very grateful. Don't miss a single thing out. Assume nothing. I have a boxed game installed. Nothing else.

Hi HugeF1

Without Trainstore, you'll have real problems with Dorset Coast as it's a huge route with many activities and stock, all of which have to be loaded in to MSTS before you can run the activity you want. This can take so long that it might appear that your system has frozen up. Using Trainstore, the strain of loading all these items is removed as it "stores" the items you don't need so only the ones you do need to run the activity are loaded - this eases the strain on your system memory and it'll load up much quicker. I'm afraid there's no shortcuts - you will need to re-install Trainstore and read at least the first part of the manual so you understand the basics of how it works and what you need to do. Using the "Easy" setting, most of it is automatic and it shouldn't take you too long to become familiar with it.

Following on from previous post....
However, now it says there's a LOT of files missing from DC. I still have the original stuff though...

I downloaded a bit of stock as well, but THAT's having problems, this is the error report.

I tried looking for the Common.Sound folder, but it's not there....

I will just add one thing to Ashley's wise words - don't reinstall MSTS every time something goes wrong. A reinstall very rarely helps, and it usually makes things worse. This Forum will help you to solve your problems as long as you follow the advice.

In your case checking that you had followed all the steps in the Dorset installation Readme, installing Trainstore and learning how to use it in Easy Mode, making sure you have the latest Tsection installed and checking Textured Sky in the Advanced Options would probably have solved the problem, as long as you have all the required rolling stock, sounds and cabs installed. From your latest post it looks like you haven't - I can't help you with the Voyager sounds as mine cam on the Scottish Central Community CD, but I'm sure that someone will help you.

The error messages you mention in your last post are all linked to the Alphaline Wessex 158 unit, which (as the "readme" file says) needs the Voyager sounds in order to run properly. I'm not such exactly which Voyager sounds Anton has aliased the 158 to, but I think it's likely to be the Springfield Voyager:

If this doesn't work "out of the box", you could alias the 158 unit's eng file to use those sounds, or alternatively, you could send Anton (username - Backfoot2002) a PM asking him which ones he has used - I'm sure he'd oblige.

Ok, I got that train. Same problem. It just does NOT create the right folders.... There is NO Common.Sound folder in the MSTS/Trains/Trainsets folder.... I tried manually creating it, and reinstalling the train, but nope. Either the exe is screwed, or I have a dodgy copy of the game....

I think it's safe to rule out an error in the exe file or the game itself.

OK, let's look at this problem another way. In your trainset folder, go to the Alphaline Wessex 158 unit folder and look for the file with the name that ends ".eng"

Open that file using Windows Notepad and scroll down until you see one of the two lines (either one will do)that refer to "sound" and tell us exactly what the whole line says. I'm at work at the moment :( so I can't check it out myself on my own system.

Sound ("..\\..\\common.sound\\voyager\\d9eng.sms" )

That seems to make sense from what you said. However, there is NO folder called that, and when I installed the voyager train, there still wasn't.
