I want to build a route

I can get to the Route Geometry Extractor, zoom into the area I want to build, select it by drawing a rectangle around it but I can't go any further.

The bottom line is, I want to build a trial route, just to get into the swing of things as I've never done it before. So I looked it up in one of the FAQs here and now I've come unstuck.

What do I do???
