Recommended books slot

Post by Goingnorth »

Just thought I'd include information for 'must get' books for loco and route builders out there. Obviously if anyone has more please post!

British Rail Main Line Electric locomotives

ISBN 0-86093-559-0

Technical and operational information on all electric locomotives from 1900 onwards from ES1 to class 92, Eurostar and Channel tunnel locos. Complete with drawings and photos from all angles. Drawings at 4mm:1ft

British Rail Main Line Diesel locomotives

ISBN 0-86093-544-2

Technical and operational information on all diesel locomotives from 1900 onwards from D0260 to class 76. Complete with drawings and photos from all angles. Drawings at 4mm:1ft

Channel tunnel trains

ISBN 1-872009-33-6

Technical information of the workings of Eurotunnel. Compete with photos and diagrams of all rolling stock. May be out of print.

Quail Map series. Invaluable guide to track diagrams of the UK.

Modern signalling handbook

ISBN 0-7110-2815-X

Good overview of modern and older practices

Signalling Atlas and Signal Box Directory

ISBN 1 899890 15 7

Methods of working/Historical details/Present equipment on all lines including preserved railways, LUL and others.

Line specific Books

Through Limestone Hills

ISBN 0-86093-217-6

Very detailed book on the Ambergate to Chinley line. Includes many scale diagrams. May be out of print

From the Footplate series

A very enjoyable 'steam age' trip along many of Britain's main lines. Lots of photos and detail.

Woodhead: The electric railway

ISBN 1-870119-81-9

A very detailed look on the 1950s now defunct electrified route. Many books have been written about this line, but this is one of the best.

And then, once you've finished buiding your line:

I Tried To Run A Aailway by Gerard Fiennes, to explain why you should spend your money on running it with Deltics rather than with management consultants.

I've got both books and they are superb.

I only wish there were similar books for DMU's, EMU's, Shunters, Coaches & Wagons and Steam Engines.
