READ ME files
I downloaded a new route yesterday (not going to say which one)
and it was all in nice executables, i thought great but one problem.
No readme file. oh well its quite simple just click and install.
hmmm that worked fine but what i didn't know was that the route used
X TRACKS and i don't and at the moment i don't want to.
the route upgraded my tsection.dat and i was screwed, error messages looking for shapes and textures were all over the place, especially when i was in RE.
as i did'nt want to insatll XTRACKSi had to reinstall MSTS as i had no back up of the tsection.dat (my own fault maybe) but if a readme file had been there it never would of happened as once i read Xtrack was needed i wouldn't of installed
mm

If the route you downloaded only copied its files to the new Route's folder, your tsection.dat file within the Global folder should not have been overwritten? The tsection.dat file within the Routes folder should not have affected any other routes.
Or did the route you downloaded install X-Tracks into your Global directory, if this is the case, then it was in breach of the X-Tracks agreement, users are supposed to download X-Tracks themselves.
Please advise which route it was, otherwise everyone will be 'stuffed'.

the tsection.dat in the global folder was overwritten
i know this cause i checked the date plus i opened it and it contained lots of xtrack references which i don't have installed
also when i went into RE there were lots of new track bits but with missing shapes and textures.
cheers dan the old tsection was there in the global.
i really can't say what route this is as the author is on this board and i really don't want to cause a row or upset anyone, there seems to be too much of this happening already.
I suspect if the author reads this post they will probably realise its there route and hopefully may update it to put a readme file with there route

Well if its the route I think it is, I have already suggested to the author that this is wrong and was effectively told to mind my own business!madmardy wrote:i really can't say what route this is as the author is on this board and i really don't want to cause a row or upset anyone, there seems to be too much of this happening already.
I had a similar problem as you but luckily had a tsection backup - in my case it loaded an oldver version of tsection and xtracks; which is the very reason that xtracks should never be distributed with the route.

Well if that's his attitude then I think you should name and shame. Arn't we here to help each other, amongst other things, after all.

Just the reason why some of us have been banging on, all these months, about this problem not just with routes but activities as well.
If it is on a cd there is not a lot that can be done about it, except if you feel strongly about the matter then tell us all what route it is and it can be given a miss (just like no picture no download).
I have previously suggested to Matt that as a vetting system is in place only uploads in archive format with a readme file be accepted. One thing with the system used on that other site nobody likes to mention, is you can read the readmes before downloading.
