MSTS Preformance
Why can I run a game like Doom 3 on my PC on Max settings with no performance problems, but while running MSTS as soon as you get to a built up area the frame rate drops through the floor and starts spluttering until it's loaded up the scenery? In the open it runs between 40 and 50fps, in the "towns" it drops off to 10fps or below. System Spec. Packard Bell iMedia 2669. XP media center. Pentium D 3.0GHz. 2.0GB of ram. Nvidia Geforce 7300se 256MB Graphics card. 800MHz FSB. Is it just the nature of the game? JJW.

Thanks for that. I am using the Bin Patch (latest stable version) God Bless the author for such a great improvment to the sim. I did wonder if it's because of it's age. Bin did improve things some what on normal routes and Add-on routes like Great Eastern and LSE but my own route suffers alot I expect because I over do the scenery abit.
Still a great sim, carry on regardless. JJW.

Train sims ask the most of 3d rendering, as each and every object must have it's size recalculated on every frame due to the constant forward motion (look to the side, even in graphically intense areas, and watch it go faster).
Also, spluttering, rather than downright poor performance, is probably an issue with Hard disc speed and/or ram capacity/speed, problems which MSTS obviates far more than anything else except maybe Trainz.

I've noticed that too. If things start to slow down, by changing the view away from a high density area the frame rates pick up again. As I said before, MSTS is a great sim and I hope when/if the new MSTS X comes out it addresses the bugs, especially those in the route editor without loosing the character of the current game. Untill then, I better start saving for some PC upgrades. JJW.
