Now from my personal point of view (without my moderator hat) - I do find it some what puzzling that people will talk about CPU and memory upgrades to get extra graphics detail and spend £100's of pounds to do so but then complain about paying a licence fee for WinRar or WinZip for a fraction of their hardware costs for very useful utilities.
The moderators even went to the trouble of creating a thread of freeware unzipping tools for those who choose not to pay.
Kindest regards
John

oh john please do have a sense of humour, read my post again, and dont put a negative outlook on it,a bit of harmless banter, praising a certain utility and certainly not knocking anybody, and wow you jump to say keep it polite,it is polite and not confrontational, blimey thats a mouthful that word.had to spit me gum out for that one.
no, no one is forcing anyone to change here.just making a point that these utilities take up hd space,so 1 is better than 2 if it does the same job.agreed?

Actually Scraggy, I too thought your post could have been interpreted as being a little confrontational, but John posted before I could. Think before you post please.scraggy wrote:oh john please do have a sense of humour, read my post again, and dont put a negative outlook on it,a bit of harmless banter, praising a certain utility and certainly not knocking anybody, and wow you jump to say keep it polite,it is polite and not confrontational, blimey thats a mouthful that word.had to spit me gum out for that one.

My whole intention in starting this thread was to warn people that the upgrade will overwrite a paid for version of Winzip 10.
I like Winzip. I know what it can do and how to do it.
For a week I was getting pop-ups every time I used Winzip telling me that an update was available.
I finally installed it and found that I my registration did not work and version 10 had been overwritten.
At no time did I see and warning that I would have to pay for the upgrade.
It took a bit of searching on their website to find that I had to pay again and even more searching to find I could upgrade for half price.
Winzip 4 has only 4 additional functions - three I will not use and one, the ability to show thumbnails, I can live without.
I do not consider the upgrade worth the money.
Fortunately I kept the Winzip 10 download file but how many other people have been deprived of a program they bought and paid for?

If it's got buffers it's Chain.

when I upgraded to winzip 10 from 9,I had registered it cost me less because of registering from when I first bought it,thats why it is always best to register any utility,as you get some special upgrade prices and perks,so you should not have had to pay extra.
what you should have done was email winzip support and they would have sorted it for you,as you say you should not pay twice.but on the other hand if you bought winzip through a 3rd party and not from winzip themselves you can be caught out. so always get it direct from the main site itself.it can save a lot of grief and hastle when upgrading.

Hi there,
I see the point that Ian is making, If you buy a licence for a current product, I would expect any upgrades to be free unless pre-warned that you may have to pay for a licence upgrade. It is certainly not fair to tell you after you have installed the product that you have to pay. I think that is a bit underhand.
Hi scraggy. absolutely no offence taken in any form or manner. Yes I am a cheapskate at times, I can't help it. I try to go by the rule, If it ain't broke don't fix it. as long as I can unzip anything I need to use, I won't upgrade.
The moment I can't unzip one of Ian's fine wagons. I will get a new utility.

Unless you paid for WinZip "Standard Single-User Upgrade Assurance" in addition to the Standard Single-User price for download delivery you do not get the free upgrade from 10 to 11.
What you must do with download delivery is keep your download delivery receipts (preferably printed copies), normally an email at time of purchase containing the necessary codes. For example, I recently had a total crash of a USB2 External HD on which I had stored a copy of Corel's Paint Shop Pro X, and needed to redownload this program. You cannot find the product on the Corel web site, but a telephone call to Corel UK giving the order number etc. resulted in an identical email to the original in which was the all important link to download the product. I would have been unable to do this if I had not paid for Corel's Optional Software Download Insurance.
You may well argue the rights and wrongs of this system, but that is what exists. Perhaps the only sure way is to buy boxed products, but you can't always do this.
I recently purchased via download an 'Ashampoo' product with Premium Support, included was a back up CDROM which duly arrived a week later in the post, the cd being personalized with name and unlock code, now that is different!
