oooh, right click your Train Simulator .exe in Program Files/Microsoft Games/Train Simulator, and you'll see it's "patch v1.4", so they are going up in .1's, and that means that unless .5 is simply the fact it's out on a retail CD, it means there's a further update (maybe will be available as a free download?!)

Oh yes, I've got 1.4

They did release the patch twice, originally with a load of stuff (updated makeace etc) and later re-released just as the msts update, editors and tools separate.

I was wondering if the versions had different builds in them, but I have checked, having both in my download directory, and they are both 1.4, incidently the file was dated november 01 so it took them a while to release it! (feb 02 first release, redone in april)

So where your 1.3 came from is a mystery John!

This 1.5 better be worth it (atleast come with a good modern UK loco or route, or even a tilting trains option) otherwise I'll leave it untill 2.0. I wonder what they'll call it? Microsoft Train Simulator 2003?

Alan,

I reran Train_Update1.exe (06/02/2002) so it looks as if there is another version if as you say it is dated April. I am now off to to get it.

I asked a couple of contacts today, and they don't seem to know of any big release info, so it sounds like it might just be a repackaged version with the latest patches. Shall ask a bit more next week (Tuesday will be the earliest) to see what else I can find - if anything.

Makes me wonder if TS v2.0 is further away than we thought though, if all they are doing is re-packaging TS v1...?

The odd thing is if you check the properties of train.exe it is V1.4, but the launcher.exe (that includes the desktop icon) it is V1.3. There is a fresh copy of launcher.exe in the update.

Mine was at V1.4 after all, I was just looking in the wrong place.

That explains it John, as I had both versions of the update and they were 1.4.

I tried readint the version of the original exe off the CD, but it doesn't seem to contain version info, and I'm not reinstalling just out of curiosity! :)

Alan,

At least if I have to do a reinstallation I now have a choice. I suppose MS split the update to reduce the download size, the original Train_Update1.exe is 7.03MB and trainupdate.exe is 1.93MB.

It's all done to confuse us

I think the original update had the train update plus the makeace etc. then they realised most users wouldn't want makeace, so repackaged into two files.

SimUK - further away than you thought? Nah, I wouldn't expect to see Train Sim 2 until October 2003 personally!

I suspect this release is, as someone has said, related to the UK release of Trainz and to 'refresh' it in the stores so people find it again now that most stores have taken it down.

Having been involved in selling MS producst for quite some time now through work, suspect version 1.5 will be little more than a re-release with all the patches applied. Since the patches only take us up to version 1.4, i suspect we are going to see another patch put on the MS Trainsim website that will bring us all up to version 1.5. Kind of like you find with MS office, you can either re-buy the suite in the stores complete with the service packs, or you can download the SP.

well waddya know pardners... another Microsoft marketing ploy!

With regard to v2.0 I assume, of course that it will be a full product at the grand total of about 60 squiddly-doodlies? Or will there be an upgrade option available?

I bet the line churned out by the manufacturers will be ' too many refinements and improvements to make an upgrade option viable- give us yer money!'

Guess which option I would not go for. Answers on a postcard. Winner gets a night out with me, loser gets 5 nights out with me!

As with Flight Sim, 2.0 of MSTS is highly likely to be a completely new product - they've never offered upgrade pricing before so they're not likely to start now :)

Looking on the bright side, if you take what we have now and imagine all that development and more going in to it on top of what we've got, MSTS 2.0 could be rather impressive indeed.
