In my opinion, it's a draw between York, Manchester and Leeds, though Leeds loses marks as it is to big to see everything at once!!!! At least on Manchester and York you can see almost everything at once.

The NRM viewing balcony is really good to see all the trains arriving and departing, and it even has a live link with the signalling centre so you can see all the trains and there locations- it's brilliant.

The best place at Manchester is at the end of a platform - 10/11 I think, as it juts out the furthest, so you can see every train (It's so long that the Virgin trains don't obscure your view.

When I went to Leeds though, there is so much going on (Not that thats a bad thing!), with no particular vantage point, and so a lot can be missed. Especially when GNER expresses wait in the middle platforms!!! You can't even see through the Eurostar's tinted windows.

Downside to that is that there are many trains that terminate at York to/from south of York, which don't go past the NRM, e.g. the hourly service to Blackpool, the service to Selby/Hull, the Dearn Valley line trains to Hull via Sherburn in Elmet, the Calderdale line trains to Manchester Victoria, and until recently GNER's Eurostar service. Some Virgin trains start at York also.

Also, I'm not sure if you can see the trains to Scarborough from there either? You might be able to but not a good view.

As for Leeds... there is now a bridge accross the through platforms which you can see out of in both directions - see Tyler's photos.

Yeah, that is a downside, not being able to see trains on the other side, but you can see Scarborough trains. n fact, you get a prolonged view of them as they wait at Platform 4.

looks like York is the winner :D

although Leeds is a fantastic new station now.

How about going to them both, along with Doncaster - see http://forums.atomic-systems.com/viewtopic.php?t=6955

If it is trains your looking for a night at Stafford is the best having spent a night there I saw mail trains, EWS freight, F/Liner trains, 37's on passenger trains, a class 50 on a VSOE train as well as plenty of Virgin trains and other DMU's. All in all a great number of trains. Well worth a look

I reckon Leeds is the prettiest, but for movements get yourself a seat between Charing X and London Bridge. That section handles 57 trains an hour at peak times through it, thats an awful lot! All control by the poor people in Victoria :)

Doncaster says it all plenty to see, got the works where DRS do major overhauls GNER trains VIRGIN, CENTRAL, HULL and ARRIVA and a MML HST on summer saturdays not including EWS and FREIGHTLINER services.

I've been going to doncaster singer NATIONAL POWER had there 59s and still seen everything from 20s to 91/1s, 141s to 170s, and the 308s and 321s (including the stansted ones!) ive even seen a 121 there.

Oh and Doncaster has an announcer that sounds like julian clarey
