no, i haven't done any thing like that at all,
the last time everythign was fine, i was making a journey with the flying scotsman (LNER pacifics model) from portsmouth harbour to brighton everything was fine, completed it and shut down the computer. restarted it 2day and thus the problem i have???
so i uninstalled the bin patch still the same problem,
then i uninstalled the who program then reinstalled it (just the default program) with out the bin patch and the problem is still there.

Check to make sure you havent checked simple controls by mistake. Using simple controls can cause this problem.

no i haven't checked simple controls that was one of the first things i checked, and i completly release the brakes and it still has the same effect i can't thing of any thing else i have even tried to change the release button key in the settings but i have found an interesting problem if i try to set the button to be the ' key then the computer thinks i have tried to enter the ] key, i restored the defaults and tried to see if this effected the running so i tried the ' key and nothing then i tried the ]key and still nothing, i changed the key to another key and it still won't let me apply the brakes unless i use the mouse??
so i have no idea what to do???
cheers,

Check your keyboard settings in control panel. Make sure they are set to English UK and not English US or some other language.

Interesting. I had a similar problem recently when using an external keyboard with my laptop. Most of the brake keys didn't work. I remapped them to the O,P,K and L keys instead, using the Options dialogue in MSTS. It works fine now, and the Sim remembers the settings (better than me, I still sometimes try the old keys...)

If you are running Windows XP it is most likely the startup video that is the problem.
To confirm, when in the cab use the ALT + TAB keys to switch to desktop then ALT + TAB back into MSTS. If the brake keys work now it’s the startup video.
To resolve, go into the GLOBAL folder in MSTS and rename the ‘startup.mpg’ to ‘startup.mpg.bak’.

Would you happen to be using an HP pavillion with wireless keyboard and mouse?
