Youve given yourself the answer in your own post. Turn the settings down to those suggested. It runs fine on my old PC with everything turned down 2 notches and sounds at medium and i cant say im missing much detail. Southampton is a very heavy tile and everything will have trouble there on full settings.

My PC is 5 years old and only has a 64mb graphics card :)

are you using MSTSBin? I found that using that enabled me to run Dorset Coast at higher detail settings on my Geforce 4MX card.

I must say that I have to have everything turned down to zero except number of objects which is only turned up a fraction and I still can only a max of 15 fps when driving in the country side on Dorset Coast.

Places like Southampton, Eastleigh, Reading, London area and any area with a lot of building or tracks are still like a silde show.

I put it down to my PC specs which are :-

AMD Duron 900 CPU
512meg PC2100 DDR memory
PC6200 256meg AGP graphics card
A single 120gig standard IDE HD
An old C-Media 8734 PCI sound card

Also before starting MSTS I use Smart Close to shut down all running programs and un needed services. I then shut down my anti virus as its not need when playing MSTS. I then start Train Store and then press alt+crtl+del and close explorer.

Even with all non needed things shut down I still can`t turn the setting up.

Before anyone asks yes I do have the latest drivers for everything and I have MSTSBin 1.7 installed.

So my conclusion for me is to wait until next year when I will have saved up enough cash to buy a new PC as this one is past its best. I`m hoping to get to London and buy just a new complete Tower from Morgans for about £200-£250.

Keith.

5 years is a lifetime in PC terms.

That would be because you havn't downloaded the official Microsoft patch for MSTS?

Hi Dazza
I ran with a 128Mb FX5200 for three years until last year.........so a 6200 should cope with MSTS.........unless the 'turbo cache' means its hasn't got its own dedicated memory?
What is the spec of the rest of the PC?
Are you trying to run above 1024x768 16bit ?
Cheers
Jon

OK, see, you're thinking railway timescales here.

Five year old stock may still be considered factory fresh, but A PC older than about 10 mins is a crock :(

Mine's a wreck too, and you know what they say "if it works, it's obselete".

My bro and I have the same basic setup, the difference is that he has a 6200 and I have a 6800 GTS, he can get OK frame rates on Dorset, with a few options backed off a bit, I can get those extra options on, AND some AA and AF, but end up with the same framerate. My card cost me a mere 50 quid on ebay (Asus V9999GE, be wary of lesser 6800's particularly other Asus ones!), tis but a stop gap until my new machine comes togethrt,

Well it curious because my oldest dell is now almost 6 years old, its a P4 2ghz machine on a 533mhz FSB with 512mb ram, 40GB IDE Hard disk and a Gforce 2 (I think) 64mb graphics card and a soundblaster 5.1 sound card. With settings as per the recommended level I can get frame rates of 35fps in open countryside and typical 12 - 15fps in built up areas. The exceptions are, of course, Waterloo to Clapham 7 - 10fps usually, Eastleigh around 7fps, and Southampton around 10fps. Not good i agree, but well able to cope with running the route, so im puzzled by people with higher spec machines getting worse performance. The Bin patch (im only using V1.6) did help a lot with frame rates.

Im wondering if its the Antialiasing and anastropic stuff that causes the difference. My old card doesnt have those, of course.
i aint givin up even if i have to buy a new Graphics Card
I think this may well make it worse, not better. Try an older card not a newer card and i bet you will see a difference.

Jon,

As far as i know the 6200 turbo cache cards come with 128 mb of memory and card and then use 128 mb from system ram to make them to 256mb.

Lad491,

AA & AF turned on will have a big impact on the game i run with them maxed out and barley get above 10fps on DC but as soon as they are aturned off the fps jumps to around 20 - 25
