Hi everyone, ive decided to get into train sims, and i got MSTS, i was wondering, what tweeks there was out to make the game look better.
As in Flight Sim 2004 i was able to replace textures and stuff to make it looks and run smoother.

Also in a few days i'll be interested in adding trains and routes (if poss) into the game.

Best advice I can give is to read through all of the sticky threads at the top of each section of the forum...and have a read through the forum in general. It's amazing what you'll pick up

There have been recent updates to MSTS under the heading of MSTSBin, changing much of it for the better, many forums have a special section for !

Most Train Sim web sites have File Libraries you can download an enormous amount of free add-on routes and rolling stock from, my favourite routes being the German WUPPER-EXPRESS and STADTBAHN-U79:

Becoming a paid-up member helps to get instant access to these File Libraries, frequently being slowed down by too many users accessing them !

But be warned, you can get hooked on MSTS very easily !

I found when i first started Train Simming the Help For Beginners section was really helpful every one always answered and helped resolve all my problems.

Thames Mersey allows you to run along the WCML London Euston-Manchester/Liverpool. I'd either wait for the soon to be released V4 DVD or get the V3 CD and patch it yourself

Following on from Doug's good advice download the stuff on the front page in the "Quick Picks" selection. They're the best of the fixes, patches, tweaks and utilities and they're up to date versions.

Take my advice and don't add loads of stock and routes without checking each as you go along. Finding errors is easy if you do it step by step and there's plenty of help on the forums. If you go nuts and load lots of new stuff and end up with loads of errors you'll spend ages just finding the problem

Once you're comfortable with adding stuff and you've read some tutorials here or on Trainsim.com (the US site) or perhaps most comprehensive of all for tutorials http://steam4me.railpage.org.au/trainsim/index.html
the Australian site you'll get to know your way around.

Don't give up.

Try some of the commercial add-ons that come with route stock and activities in easy install packages. Probably the best and latest is Great Eastern by Making Tracks who have a great site with loads of support, patches, upgrades etc. I think you'll be amazed at what you can get for your money compared with some FS add-ons.

Alos check out the CD ordering section for UKTS CDs/DVDs of routes, stock and activities which get you a months premium membership (or extension to an existing pm)

Camera hacks "tweak" the settings in the default MSTS camera views file, improving dramatically on each of the views 1 - 7. For example, the "2" view can be pulled back much farther, giving a panorama of the area, whilst the "4" view gives a tighter pan view from a trackside perspective, centred on the loco as it passes. Installing the bin patch enhances some camhack views further. Before installing, make sure your back up the default camera file in your Global folder (I think it's called "camcfg.dat") - then if you prefer the original views, you can restore it.

I still think CoDriver Mike's camera hack is the best to date:

IMO the bin patch has made the greatest development for camera angles at it allows greater freedom in positioning the camera and the distance it can be drawn back from the scene.

Also note that hitting shift+Ctrl+9 in 2, 3 or 4 allows you to rotate the camera using the mouse.

I use my own personal Camcfg.dat, which is the best views of Mike and Richards camcfg, in one.

I think its the ultimate experience, using 2 excellent pieces of work.
