steam loco painting competition anyone?

Post by decapod »

I'm about to release my Austerity J94 0-6-0 Saddletank - painted as K&ESR Northiam (see Austerity Progress in screenshots forum), hopefully tomorrow night.

At the same time, I'll release a repainting kit, describing what parts of the textures do what. I intend to donate this model as a sort of community model, any/all repaints have my full permission, I don't care about copyright.

377 of these locos were produced and a lot have been preserved (so one loco could have several liveries)

This could give us some scope for a small painting competition (not a serious one like Matt's - or would Matt like icons of the same loco repainted?)
- it would be fun to post all the screenshots and get the members here to have a poll, in a week or two, for the best paint job.

Is anyone interested in doing this?

We could end up with more skins than the dash-9 on t***n-s*m.c*m ;)

(ulterior motive - I need K&ESR 23 and 24 too)

I'd be happy to donate a couple of months premium access to the best one(s) too.

A destinct lack of replies...

I'll release it shortly (this morning), let's see how popular it is

http://www.cirsel.freeserve.co.uk/wdindex.htm has a few pics and just try using google and various combinations of "austerity" "j94" "hunslet" comes up with quite a few.

LOL! Sounds like a great idea. Also a good intro into the repainting scene. Thanks very much for giving blanket permissions... that's very generous of you. Not sure what I can contribute, but I'll certainly have a go once I'm back from my hols.

Now to find some pictures... and repainting instructions...

Another excellent resource I've found is my local library, it's free too!

most libraries have their catalogue on the internet these days so you can browse from work (not that I ever do that ;) )

For J94 pics, try a book called "Industrial Steam" I've no idea who it's by, but it's a small hardback book.

I'd recommend anyone to just have a go and see what it turns out like. Texturing is definitely the hardest part of modelling - I cheat these days, the shiny effect hides a very plain texture :D

If anyone has problems getting their model to run, just e-mail me.

I forgot to add in the repaint instructions - make sure you change the name () information in the ENG file or you'll see two locos with the same name in the MSTS list.

Just a quick thought...

- for those planning a repaint, it may be advisable to post the file name you're going to use to stop duplicates.

Duplicates of individual locos is not a problem, one loco may have several liveries, just the file names :)

First of all, I bags "J94-NCB5" which may give a clue as to what colour it will be ;)

58 downloads of the repaint kit - seems like a few people may have a go :)

Any livery sounds good to me, you can even make up your own (though rainbow may not look too good.

Anyone doing Wilbert or K&ESR 23 (brown) or 24 (green)?

I'd enter, do we have to do proper liveries they carried or can we paint them however we want?
