MSTS Doesn't Understand Keyboard Commands....

Post by ArrivaTrains »

Hmm, this is a new one on me. :-?

I installed MSTS on my new PC today. Took it for a spin and all worked ok. Please note, I have a wireless keyboard and mouse setup.

I then downloaded the Microsoft Patch to update for MSTS to the "latest" version.

What I have done next is moved stuff from my old PC to this new one - Trains, Routes, Sound, Global shapes, etc.

Now, when i'm driving a train, the following keys are not working properly.

[ - Decrease Loco Brake does not work
] - Increase Loco Brake - Instead this Decreases it :x
# - Increases the loco brake - Why when this key isnt even used in the sim??
' - supposed to increase train brake, but does nothing.

I can therefore use the ; key to release my train brake, but theres no way of stopping the train, unless I use the mouse whilst in cab view, to move the brake handle. :-?

I have used the MSTS key assignment menu to change the key around, but MSTS thinks im pressing a totally different key to what I actually am doing. Eg, when I press the ] key, it comes up as E on the assignment menu within msts. :x

Does anyone have some sort of idea what I may have done to cause this problem??

Also to point out, some of the above keys are used in FS2004, and all work as they should, activating various features in Flightsim, so Im guessing this must be a MSTS problem, not the keyboard.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center edition.

I have uninstalled MSTS, and am going to try again from scratch, but in the meantime, help would be appreciated.

Thanks. :)

Right, thanks to a forum search, I managed to figure out the problem.

It is somehow related to a windows update for the Infra Red Remote sensor on the machine (for the media remote).

I unplugged it to play MSTS, and hey presto, all the keys work on the keyboard.

I'll just have to unplug the remote sensor everytime I play MSTS from now on.

It seems improbable, but does the remote select the US keyboard set-up rather than the UK one?

No, it shouldnt, as it is only for the Windows Media remote.

The keyboard sensor is a different kettle of fish and is programmed for UK keys. :)

Deleting the start-up video or renaming it solves a similar problem. No idea why!

Remember I have the same PC as you? I've had this problem with the ' and ] key. When i reassigned them on the MSTS keyboard set up they don't show but work in the sim. I had to reassign them for diesel and electric locos.
Have a look at my pics from UK and Africa.
