Sound problems in external view
hi, I've had some sound problems when driving any train in the external view. Basically, it's extremely quiet, you can only hear the engine noise when zoomed right in and only very quietly.
Is there any solution to this?

sound issues
I have had this problem too where the sound of the diesels outside were really quiet. But I could hear the ambient sounds like birds and cars etc.
Then I found something very wierd. I zoomed in close to the lead locomotive (any kind of loco) and it was quiet. No diesel or chuff-chuff. Then I moved back one car (car or another loco) with ctrl arrow.
BANG!!
I heard it all. The diesels were nice and loud and the CHUFF-CHUFF was also loud and clearly pronouned. It was like I was right next to the engine.
Now here is another wierd thing.
I tried a train with 3 Diesels and consist. I zoomed in on the first diesel and it was quiet. I increased the throttle but the sound of the first diesel stayed at idle. The pitch didn't increase.
Then I zoomed in on the second diesel and it was much louder and clearer AND the sound of the motor had increased in pitched as it should have when I increased the throttle. Decreasing the throttle brought the pitch back down to idle. Again no affect in pitch on the first loco. Only the second one.
I zoomed in on the third loco. Again no affect in pitch of sound when I increase or decrease the throttle.
Wierd. Maybe MSTS has an issue with the external sounds when more than one engine are coupled.
HOWEVER
I am running a dolby digital 5.1 sound board on a $50,000 home theatre system for my MSTS sound so it could also be that I am hearing the surround sound portion when I am zoomed in on the first loco. The surround sound would be the ambient sound outside and perhaps a bit of the engine noise. When I zoom in on the second loco I could be hearing the engine sound as if its from the center channel. I may have to check my connections to the sound board.

Wish I had the room for such a kit in my small place.ortegus wrote:home theatre system
My Son in the States has one and we are thinking of trying to project a MSTS session onto his "Big Screen" when I get there in August. All he needs is a TV Output capable Graphics card in one of his machines we can run MSTS on.
Have you tried running MSTS that way on your Home Theater System ?
The best I can do later this year is to get one these new 40" wide Plasma Screen TVs and play on it from my computer.

Yes I am running MSTS through a 72" widescreen plasma TV. wireless keyboard, leather recliner, 6.1 channel sound. If only real engineers could relax in a leather recliner. They would fall asleep.
I have upgraded most of the default sounds in MSTS and many of my engines (I have close to 800). Being an audiophile I look for realism in MSTS sound. Its a shame its only 11lkhz mono. Hopefully the next version will be better considering most games these days are 32 bit stereo sound.

I had the same sound problem - no loco sounds when pointing at the loco from outside - all loco sounds when pointing at the tender or wagon or carriage immediately behind the loco.
The problem, also experienced by others, was my SoundBlasterLive 5.1 card.
I solved the problem by changing the effects settings on the 5.1. Can't remember which settings worked best, but I did find some that worked.
(I now have MSTS on another computer with an Audigy card and no problems, so far!)
