A download manager is a piece of software that manages your downloads. One of the more popular ones is GetRight. Since you don't know what a download manager is, there's a very good chance that you don't have one and therefore don't have to worry about disabling it.

Its simple......If you have not installed a download manager, then you don't have to worry about unloading one.

Also, if you were able to download before Matt moved the site to new servers, then you'll still be able to download.

It's just that when I was testing, I found that non premium users using a download manager may fail downloads due to the way that download managers worked. So if you dont know what one is, you're probably not using one - I tested basic Opera, Firefox and IE and all work fine on their own. If you're using Flashget, GetRight, DAP etc, then you have a download manager - but they are additional bits of software that you have to download and install yourself - and in many cases, pay for separately, so you'll know if you're using one I would think :)

While you're at it there, Matt, what happened to the most important benefit to those who support UKTS?

I use free download manager. I found that when I wasn't on premium free download manager worked just as well with downloads from here.

Download managers are well worth having, you can queue downloads, they also help speed up downloads. The best bit. If you lose internet connection or your your computer crashes a download manager can recover and just contunue the download from where it left off.

I find that DAP - Download Accelerator Plus free version speeds up my downloads appreciably. it is available from www. speedbit.com
If you are a non-premium member it may be hogging more than your fair share of the avaiable download capacity.

If you can make it work, then great, I don't have any objection to people using them - but in my tests of non-premium mode, GetRight (which is the one I use) failed abysmally on non-premium since it makes additional requests for the file prior to actually downloading it and the non-premium download server only permits one request once you are at the head of the queue.

Nothing is going to give you more than your share though, the download server is quite carefully issuing data and monitoring the rate at which it sends it, so it doesn't matter what tool you use on the client, the data isn't being sent any faster than it should be.

Download Managers help out in a number of ways such as allowing queueing of downloads, running multiple downloads side by side and splitting a single download in to multiple simultaneous downloads - ALL of these features work well with premium mode since premium mode places no restrictions on your access at all.

matt,
I gave up on Getright, although a lot of people recommend it, finding DAP a lot less fussy and generally very reliable. My only complaint with DAP is that, because of the way it works, it keeps telling me that I have masses of unopened downloads if I do not open them in the way DAP wants.

Can't say anything about other download managers but with free download manager I could only download one item when I wasn't using premium. I couldn't queue more than one. The way non premiums works I think it would be impossible to queue downloads.

I wouldn't be without "Getright", imagine getting to 97% of a 500+Mb. download and you get a dropped connection.''
