ECE addon-addon?

Post by fredrikljundberg »

I have looked at the trucks in ECE and found that they are very poor quality when driving the route and you see one at a level crossing they look awful, I have a set of low-poly but detailed trucks (Volvo FH-16 and Iveco) that i could replace them with and creat an addon to replace the originals with these? if i was to do so would anyone download it or not? It's just a thought as EB's trucks are rubbish to say the least. the textures don't even line up.

cheers

Fred

Fred - just a polite note to say its not good form to call someones work rubbish - whether that work is freeware or payware. After all, would you like it if someone called your versions rubbish. It would have been better to have merely said you have some trucks which you think are better than those supplied with xx route.

However, Im with terrone - you should definitely upload them. Consider also giving some instructions on how to replace the originals with yours, for those like me who dont know how :)

replacement trucks

Post by michaelhendle »

I would be willing to give them a try as well, but haven't a clue how to add them so some instructions on how to add them would be a great help.

i would use them. I also think that EB's are not to a good standard like they should be. I have a sense that the whole ECE route was slightly rushed :(

But yeh, intsructions would be gr8 too, as i also dont have a clue how to install them :-?

Unfortunately, by swinging words like "rubbish" around, you've already put EB's backs up.

There are a couple of things to understand when you put anything out there that modifies something that someone else has to support. A little while ago, some activities were uploaded which included *modified* versions of the original consists and paths, this of course meant that when the activities were installed, they worked fine but all the original ones were now broken. Customers then went back to EB to complain about faulty activities and it took them quite a while to realise what had happened, during this time, it's EB that looked bad, so you can't blame them for being a bit twitchy now whenever someone talks about distributing unofficial patches for their add-ons?

My recommendation to you is to go to EB and talk to them about it, perhaps they could put it out as an official patch, or simply have a look through what you're proposing and make sure that it won't cause any knock-ons. It also means you are giving the ability to refuse permission, which is after all completely their right just the same as they have the right to refuse reskins.

Suffice to say that I won't be approving modifications to ECE without a note also from EB giving it the all-clear.

And next time, choose your words more carefully, I strongly suspect a good chunk of the tone in the mail to me was caused by your throwing words like "rubbish" around (and I frankly don't blame them, i'd be none too pleased either), and it hasn't done you any favours at all.

Matt.

Perhaps you could just upload on their own with instructions on how to add them to any route. That way it is the user who is replacing anything in any route and not you.

Hi All.

I'm not speaking as an EB 'official' here, but I suspect that such a modification would not be supported (you would have to remove the modifications and restore the original route before EB would give tech support on it)

Cheers

Matt, I'm sorry if i got their backs up but when you pay £20+ for 1 part and the same again for the other i expect to get a good addon as you know yourself that the freeware addons have better detail on their trucks etc and i'm sorry but i stick by what i said as they are lets put it this way - not my words: not up to comercial standards) Please accept my apologies but i still stick by what i said before and when i uploaded them i would of course add install instructions.

I don't expect to pay £40+ for this addon to find things in it that have been made without the effort that i expected of a comercial addon - it's opinion only though.

cheers

Gentlemen. May I intervene here before this whole issue gets totally out of hand.

Firstly, to fill in the missing bits of the story....

Following Fred's original post, UKTS received communication from EuropeanBahn expressing some concerns regarding Fred's post.

Following Matt's post, another communication was received from a forum member complaining about the severity of Matt's post, saying Matt was "out of order" for giving someone a dressing down for telling the truth.

Firstly, I for one do not wish things to get out of hand in the same way as things did at the end of last year....and I don't think anyone else does either. So we need to think this through carefully.

Fred.....I believe your comments were a little harsh. I'm sure you didn't mean any bad will, but perhaps if I were to suggest that you would not be too pleased if I said the same thing about your work...which is the measure I believe anyone should use when passing judgement on other's work. And I make no comment about the quality of the vehicles you were passing judgement on - as I've not seen them!

Matt..... I totally agree with the message you were putting over, but again I believe it was put over a little harsh. I understand your concerns about things getting out of hand....and the way in which you posted showed this concern...or should I say fear!

Everyone at EB......May I ask you try not to take the comments made in this thread to heart. I know they were a little harsh, but I'm sure that Fred didn't mean any bad feelings. In fact I do believe that in a round-about way, he was paying compliment to the route by offering to "enhance" it.

And finally to the forum member who complained about Matt's response, may I suggest that if everyone takes in what I've posted here, then nothing but good will come out of the whole episode.

If anyone has any comments, please PM to me, and I will respond by PM.

Thank you

Doug

Update (as of 8th August):

I've had a PM from Fred acknowledging that his remarks were a little harsh and he has asked I point out that he never intended to cause any upset.
