Big Boy

Further tested "old" v "new"Engfile locos.
Made up consist of 37X98T reefer waggons total~3600T.
Started from West Coram, heading for Summit
With my limited driving skills "old","heavy" BB got just past Java East before failing hill.
New version failed the first major hill a few minutes after starting.

Big Boy Water Levels

Post by supergoods »

For Rick

Tested using the AI fireman on Marias Pass & S&C.

On Marias Pass the track is so rough that the loco pitches badly and the water levels still fluctuate wildly and uncover the crown, however this fireman must have someone looking after him as nothing bad ever happens and I can't evaluate if there was any priming.

Looking at the .eng file I noticed the boiler length is 20.85m which is 68 feet, A very cursory look at a side elevation shows something around 14 to 15 m may be closer, however I would like to know the correct boiler length including firebox, but not, as I think was done the smokebox which is very long on this loco

I changed it to 14.9m as an experiment and still get some uncovering of the crown on rough track but not so bad

We definately need advance gradient posts and smoothed out track changes to run properly

Supergoods, The AI fireman will not let you fail, you can not even run out of steam and stop, it lets you keep going, was ment for novices, and shunting so you would not have to keep an eye on boiler. if you leave me your email address I'll send you the tinkered files I have done Ok.........................Rick

Supergoods, seem's you were spot on about boiler size found autocad drawing of one 13.87 meters is about correct boiler length, that's Firebox
length 23.5 ft.....Tubes 22 ft so that means boiler volume is wrong as well

bigboy fixed

Post by plugin »

I noticed that big puffer is causing a bit of head scratching on both sides of the pond. Much of the eng file stats are incorrect, to say the least.

Total weight was 604 tons.
Tender (fully laden) 82 tons.

Someone noticed that the correct cylinder diameter was in fact 23.75inches. Also how about putting aside fractions expressed as ½, and using such new fangled things like 50%.

I have fixed the problems and my big puffer can haul the consist from Shelby as far as that long drag at Bison East, I will do more work on that. Starting at Settle is a breeze, as is the rest of that route.

Come on back.

RE: water level-----found this on a site-------canot remember ware

"The boiler is of enormous size in keeping with the great capacity of the locomotive and includes as part of its equipment two water glasses with a difference of 5 in. in the level of lowest indication, for operation on 1 1/2 per cent maximum grades. The lowest indications are 5 1/2 in. and 10 1/2 in. above the highest point of the crown sheet, respectively, with the locomotive standing on level tangent track. "

It's coal could be consumed in under 30 Miles' if you have any information on it sites and such post them please, I've cut down boiler size and volume they were not correct, from what I 've read on net about it , it was purpose built to run across the Wasatch mountains, took the place of 3
Engines, burned something like 10 tons a hour.............Rick

Ps I'm beginning to wonder if the Eng.file was just a Joke.

Big Boy

Post by bjdick »

Big Boy Website,"www.trainweb.org/jlsn/bigboy/informat"or type in bigboy in search(Watch out for other Bigboys??)
They state boiler 65feet too,but this includes smokebox, think actual working length 46ft or so.
I appreciate original Eng files may not be "accurate",but I think modded ones may be underpowered, for full load 3600T,excluding loco.
Perhaps a compromise between the two?Anyway hope this assists,it's a good site+lots of pics, tech data.
